Had a frustrating day yesterday. I know what I need to do with my eating, but sometimes I just find myself doing stupid things (eating the leftovers off my kids' plates, not eating enough fruit & veggies, eating too many calories, etc.).

I felt like I was making some progress and had finally broken through the plateau I had been on, but I was up again a little this morning (TMI-could be water retention due to time of month).

My workouts have been fairly consistent, I know it's the food. "Can't out-train a bad diet". I just need to get my head in the right place. Any suggestions, besides the obvious?

If you have exceeded your calorie count you can help counter that by adding on more calorie burning exercises.  Try increasing your calorie differential to help you counter act your bad diet.

hey everyone!

hope you all have a great weekend! i'm planning on fitting in a long bike ride today and an OW swim/bike brick tomorrow. weather is reasonable at last! not too hot, not too humid and not raining.
joyous.

i am keeping up my no soda trip, it seems to be making a difference... might have a bit more of a loss to report on wednesday but i don't want to jump the gun Laughing

I can't believe that cutting out empty calories are causing a difference...mmmm. Great job and hope your long ride and your brick were all that you wanted them to be....

My fun this weekend was working. I hopefully helped 16 Apts and their tenants be free from bedbugs (yuck) at least for a while.

ha ha ha! only surprising because my soda habit was pretty modest, 3-4 cans coke/week = 465 - 620 calories/week "extra"... but I guess every little helps!!

good job ridding that apt building of nasty little blood suckers... that's one weight-loss strategy I'm not going to be trying out. Tongue out

My soda habit was really bad.  Probably 25-30oz of Pepsi, Dr Pepper or Mountain Due 5 days a week.    I have been clean now since starting this challenge except for about 12oz on the 4th at a party...

Can't wait till Wed.  I think I am going to hit my goal a week early.  200.2lbs today with a goal of 199 by the end of the month.

Ok since we're talking about soda, a question.

I LOVE diet soda. It has zero calories, but I've heard some say that you should still try and limit it or cut it out all together. Anyone else heard this? Anyone know why? Anyone cut out diet soda and notice a weight loss? Opinions please.

I don't know the "truth" about diet soda.  I have read that it doesn't satisfy your body's sweet cravings because you don't get the energy rush of sugar.   That makes sense to me, but I don't know if it is true.

I joined the first No Sugar Challenge back in December 2008.  As of December 21, 2008, I have not had a Diet Coke (or any soda) since.  I used to drink a lot of Diet Coke.  Lots and lots.  That was the hardest part about the decision to join the challenge - I didn't know whether I could give up the Diet Coke.  Well, it turned out that I could.  And did.  I also found out that I could do without the vast majority of the sugar in my diet.  It was tough the first couple weeks, but after that, I found that I really didn't care.  That I could do without it.  I don't have Diet Coke now because I am afraid that this lovely substance that I enjoyed for decades will taste like what it is - a canful of chemicals.

All the things that have been told to be BAD about artificial sweetners has been proven study after study after study. The key that the A.S. people say is "Moderation". If you only drink diet soda's in moderation it shouldn't be TOO bad.

Studies have shown that the body gets tricked into thinking that it is getting something sweet...When it doesn't it gets PISSED and makes YOU eat something.

Bottom line is what are YOU happy with? I get tired of people (Scientists or whatever) telling me what is good/bad and then OOPS, We were wrong . Take into consideration the low fat craze. Doctors said we have to cut out fat and increase carb consumption.....OOPS, That didn't work so well since now we have a lot of fat diabetics.

I don't know for sure either.  There are two things I will say though.

1.  There are lots of people that drink all diet sodas and are way over weight.

2.  Water helps flush the system, helps keep you from holding water and virtually every nutritionist and diet plan out there stressed the need for water to lose weight.  So if you are drinking anything other than water, you are probably replacing it with something else and thus you are not getting the recommended amount of water.

I'm not gonna make my goal.  I'm 150 today and haven't seen my weight lower than 148 in the past week.    Ate out twice this past weekend.  But before then, I was eating right.  I just hate that my weight is so high right now.

All good points about the soda. I've heard the phrase "sugar begets sugar" (meaning that if you eat sugar it makes you crave more-so eating sugary food revs up your appetite causing you to overeat) but never thought about the artificial sweeteners acting this way. But, duh, it makes sense. Also, I'm definately not getting in the water I need. Think I'm gonna start gradually limiting the diet coke and other sugars (artificial or not) see what it does to my appetite. Thanks.

Wow, all this talk about soda problems hits home hard. I LOVE POP (us northerners don't get the soda thing). When eating bad (which is almost always but has been better for the last week or so) I would drink daily anywhere from 100-150 oz of pop a day. Usually Coke and Mountain Dew. Yeah I am sure my insides just might fall out someday.

I just love the taste and it goes down so smooth. After I cut it out for a while it always burns when I first start drinking it again. I have made it 9 months before, and right now am trying to cut it out again to finally get rid of these excess lbs.

Best of luck to all of us who fight this never ending fight.

don't beat yourself up about it! think positive!!!

maybe lay off weighing yourself every day for a while, limit yourself to once a week and just focus on the positive side of being good to your body by eating right and working out.

i think that it can be really hard to make progress when you don't have a lot of weight left to lose. also, might be worth looking at how your body measurements change over time... you're working out quite a bit so you might be building muscle which weighs more than fat. i had a similar issue, i put on a couple of lbs and was super depressed about it until i  measured myself and found that i had lost an inch from my waist...

Thank you guys for the support.  I really need it now.

Unfortunately, today I'm 152.1.  Since I've started to train for a tri, we've limited eating out to about every other week.  I'm wondering, if my recent weight gain is due to the eating out.

What I can't understand is, when we did go out to eat, I watched what I ate and made sure I didn't go too much over my cal. count.  I went over by about 200 on one day and another didn't even come close to my max.

I'm a little late with my weigh in but I'm here. Really make any progress but no major gains so I'm counting that as a good thing. I still have another week to lose the last couple of pounds and I have some big workouts planned so I should be able to do it as long as I don't go crazy eating this weekend.

Our fridge is too full of junk right now. My wife is over a catalog. She just finished up a photo shoot and this last one had a lot of food in it (pies, really tasty rolls, candies) and now it is all in our fridge. I really hate to see it go to waste but then I also don't want to see it go to waist. My wife and son aren't really into sweet things like that so its all up to me to finish it up.

How about donating it?

We're a part of an organic produce co-op.  We can never finish all the food that comes in our share, so a couple of days before it goes bad, we donated to a local homeless shelter or the Ronald McDonald house.  Just FYI here:  Ronald McDonald house will give you a receipt for taxes too.

What about the sodium content? The Cals may be good, but I bet the sodium was sky high.

It's highly likely that sodium content was high.  I noticed that if I eat salty, my weight tends to go up.  I ate Chinese food on one of the days and we all know that Chinese food has a lot of MSG.

Anxious for tomorrow mornings weigh in. The first half of the week I was spot on with nutrition and workouts. Got in a tough hilly century on Saturday but then we went to Racine to watch friends do the 70.3 on Sunday and since then eating has been far from perfect. Did just get a late night 12 mile run in so hopefully it will kick start this next week.

Off to sleep for a few and then do it all again.

Holding steady @ 146/147. I seem to hit a plateau for a few weeks, then drop a few pounds, plateau, the drop.... I guess I'm at the plateau stage again. Hoping to see that drop soon.....
