Who's taking the bets? Seems he signed up for the Great Floridian, Bib 145.

http://briankuritzky.wordpress.com/2010/10/19/are-soccer-players-be...
To make a long story short, he scoffed and said I was crazy (while laughing in my face.) I repeated my claim and told him to find me an ironman race and I’ll do it. He thought I was continuing to bluff until I made him the following proposition: you spot the flight, hotel, entrance fee, bike rental, and transportation and if I don’t finish, I’ll pay you back double. His laughing continued and called me out saying I’d never go through with it. Who else would willingly swim 2.4 miles, then bike 112, and top it off by running a marathon (26.2 miles) to prove a claim? It’s impossible without at least some sort of preparation, right?

I repeated my claim, “I could do an Ironman, no training.”

He thought he’d called my bluff when he found an upcoming race (in 3 weeks time in Florida nonetheless) and waited to see if I would register. He handed me his card and went to lunch. By the time he got back, not only did I register, I booked a flight, a hotel, and a bike for the race! He was shocked (which, needless to say, is a tremendous understatement)

"No training" is a bit misleading.  He plays soccer competitively so he'll have good run conditioning.  The real question is whether he'll finish the swim under the cutoff.

Edit: also read this entry:

http://briankuritzky.wordpress.com/2010/10/22/why-the-komen-center/

Towards the bottom is a little tidbit mentioning he already ran the NYC marathon.

If he can swim he will do it. If in respectable condition (even though not specific condition), 17 hrs is one long time. If he has major health issues or is morbidly obese that is another thing.

This is just undermining the achievements of all of us who train and then race an Ironman...

If you know how to swim/bike/run, have a stupid amount of determination, and find a good race strategy for the amount of training, it's possible.

I'm sure everyone knows Crowie comes from a soccer background (socca as he says it), although I think he trains some :-).

My guess is that this guy's hammies will give out on the bike (or something 'crippling' like that) and he won't be able to continue/finish.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

We'll see. Should be interesting to read the RR

From his blog:
http://briankuritzky.wordpress.com/2010/10/21/the-beatings-will-con...
The weather will be 88 degrees and sunny. I have never been in a body of water longer than an hour, I have never sat on a bike for longer than an hour, and I have never done a marathon after already exerting myself so much. However, I do know that I will doggy-paddle my way on the swim, walk the bike 112 miles, and crawl 26.2 miles to finish if I need to.

I hope that he realizes the recovery time that doing a race "unprepared" will take.

At least he's doing it for a good cause and not just being a mouthy you-know-what!

He has the cahunas to put his money where his mouth is and if he's a well conditioned 24 year old competitive soccer player I certainly wouldn't bet against him.

" I’ve never biked for more than 30 minutes at a time (the average time for the bike is 5-6hours) and cumulatively my life-time swimming endeavors don’t even add up to a mile."

There's no way he'll finish.

He's definitely ballsy, but the smart money is against him. I do hope he can do it because that would be very badass and would blow my mind.

I'm intrigued by Brian and just read his blog. Love that he's giving back to Breat Cancer. Looks like the race results from yesterdays Great Floridian Triathlon aren't up yet, but I sure hope he finished.

not taking anything away from those that finish full ironman.  but if you take say 17 hr the pacing can be reduced quite a bit.

if he has a half decent swim and takes it slow to make cut off, bikes at a very slow pace....on a VERY comfortale bike, and just paces the marathon.  he could finish.

we know nothing of his fitness.  more then likely he will not finish, but there is a possibility.

Assuming he makes the swim, the bike and run will just be a matter of enduring the suffering.  I kinda hope he makes it.

I'm curious as to how he did.  My guess is that he missed a swim or cycling cutoff.  I'm betting that no way he finished in the 16 hrs.  I understand his point about being a good athlete and I do believe him but I don't think he understands the adaptation that needs to occur for him to translate that to swim or cycling fitness.  Also, we all know the first hurdle will be how some folks struggle with the OWS.

Well...it looks like he made it!

I googled this and ran across some posts that he in fact completed the race in 15.5 hours.

Well done sir...

If he indeed completed the race, i'm calling BS on not having any training or experience.   No way do i believe he could do a swim of that distance without previous training or current experience.

The first time i jumped into a pool to start triathlon training i nearly drowned after 50 yards because i had no clue what i was doing.   I had also just ran the NYC Marathon so i was in excellent condition.   However, i was completely worn out after 2 laps.

If he finished i'm saying BS and publicity stunt.

Easy killer! Laughing

The guy is 24 years old, played D1 soccer and I think plays professionally now, so he is in top shape. By all accounts he had 3 weeks notice on this, that's it. He says he jumped in the pool 2x to practice.

I totally see it as doable...And good for him.

My bad, what was i thinking?   2X is definitely more than enough training.   And the D1 soccer is really impressive too.

good for him.  like i said 16-17 hrs is doable....as long as you have INSANE determination.  did he want to prove his friend wrong or what!

bottom line you are not talking about some overweight dude here just getting up from a couch and saying lets do  an ironman today....
