sfred45 - 2010-12-31 9:41 PM  I will post a pic of my bike when I can find it on the comp :-) It is a trek 2.1.

I would love to get a trainer so I can ride during the winter but I have no idea how to find one to fit my bike. I am such a bike dummy... any advice? Do you recommend a trainer, or can I just ride a bike at the gym?

Steph

Steph - I have a CycleOps fluid 2 trainer and really like it.  Most bike trainers should fit on your bike.  You will need a steel skewer but most trainers come with it (if you buy new) or most bike shops will sell you one cheap.  Other brands include Kurt Kinetic, nashbar.com has one, and there are a few others.  Fluid trainers tend to be quieter but a little more expensive.

Anyone else in the group have a trainer?

Yep, even to the events that are full. I'm thinking it will IMFL, IMAZ or Wisconson.

My bikes nickname is Night Train. Named after Dick "Night Train" Lane, who is a Hall of Famer and played for the Detriot Lions, I'm a big Lions fan. Plus the bike is mostly black.

Where are people from in this forum? I'm from Lincoln, NE. I noticed a few from the Kansas City area. Just curious.

Litespeed Tuscany.   Doesn't look like this anymore, I'm upgrading the drive train & Wheels

For a trainer I STRONGLY recommend the 1UPUSA Trainer http://www.1upusa.com/bike_trainer.html.
It' incredibly durable, has the best, most realistic road feel (along with the kurt kinetic) and they have GREAT
customer service.   It's also, IMHO, the easiest to set up.

LRR - Thanks, yep I think I lucked out here.

As mentioned LRR is the mentor of the group Billy and I belong to.  Great group and I hope I can be as good of a mentor as he is.  Feel free to swing by to checkout his group.  Its been around for awhile with lots of great info in.

As for "what I am truly like" I have no idea what he is talking about and plead the 5th on any post that may be a bit "off"Tongue out

Okay folks, shake off the new years hangover and get posting here.  Time to get 2011 going!

well I've looked at the season's calendar for 2011 and I`m thinking ...no, actually, I printed off the following schedule and taped it to my fridge.

June 11 - Ottawa Riverkeeper Triathlon/Duathlon
July 30 - National Capital Triathlon/Duathlon
Sept 3 - Canadian Iron 226 Triathlon/Duathlon

I think it will be best to keep myself "local" for my first year back at this...Plus I definitely want to attempt at least 10k for the National Capital Marathon in May, maybe as a token kickoff. I also live beside Gatineau park which has quite a list of cycling races throughout the spring, summer and fall. It is a great, big (361 square kilometers) hilly green space that actually provides car-free space for 6 hours every Sunday once the snow melts. In the winter, we use it for cross-country skiing which hopefully I can get back to next week once the festive season is finally over.
I`m actually getting very excited about 2012 (bear with me) - In researching events for this commitment I`m making online, I came across some fabulous ones in a few cities throughout Québec, the province where I live. I just moved back here last year after 29 years in Toronto, so I am getting reacquainted. Anyway, owing to our temperatures in the winter, we have a couple of very cool looking events during January-March: Aquathlons (using olympic-sized swimming pools instead of open water which would really help avoid the collisions I've experienced) and winter Pentathlons (or `Pentathlons d'hiver` as we call them) which incorporate cycling, running, skating, snow shoeing and cross country skiing, averaging 30-50k. I know I`m not ready to compete in those yet but think they make a great long term goal for next winter!
Swimming is in the plan for today, as would be a long ride if I didn't still have company staying with me, but at least I will get some time in the pool!

I meant May 2011. I wanted to do that one since last July. I heard a lot of good things about it but I just found out last night my stupid (haha jk) friends are getting married that weekend in Lincoln so I won't be able to do it. Next order of business, find a new race and change my signature.

Okay folks lets hear how everyone has started the 2011 training year.  So far for me its been a 28 mile ride and am about to head out on a 5 mile run.  That's on top of putting in new hardwood flooring in the master bathroom (so much for my "time off"Smile)

Also, still want to see everyones ride!

Unfortunately, I haven't started off my new year training at all. I've been a lazy bum all day but I promise to rectify that tomorrow. I just couldn't get myself moving today. I did spend quite a bit of time researching rides though. Hopefully, I'll have pics to post soon.ShellyIron Girl sprint -New Orleans-May 22

Its been to cold to ride, and i can't do the rollers without killing my self, so i am stuck at spin class. So far this year, I have a spin class, 2200 yards in the pool, and some core work this morning.

I have to get a picture of my ride up here stat!  I ride a Burley Sahalie, not exactly a tri bike, but it had done me well.

My new years resolution is to LOG MY TRAINING ON THIS SITE!  I keep a notebook with what I plan/actually do, but I guess that won't do anyone on here much good.

Have a spin class planned tonight and a swim tomorrow.  Trying to figure out and finalize my 2011 schedule, it will be a lean year for races so I want to make sure I do ones that fit in with my half IM training.

I'm posting again today for two reasons:

1.  To bump us up to the TOP! so someone else will post.

2.  To ask a question:  has anyone ever tried a raw food detox type program? And if so, how did you find it impacted your energy levels to train?

Considering a raw food detox I found for a week, the hardest thing will be to make normal meals for the family, and be satisfied with eating an apple or cantaloop (yes I know it is spelled wrong, that is what we call it).      Just not sure this is the right decision or may have negative impact.

I have never tried a detox type program.....What would be the reason you tried it? Lose weight, or something else? If its to lose wieght, then I would be willing to look at it. I gained 10 pounds in 2.5 weeks.

Hi, Everyone!

I am so impressed with everyones goals & races! I feel inspired. Thanks.

For my A race I want to do a Olympic distance Pumpkinman in Nevada near Las Vegas in October. I have also always wanted to do the 72mile bike ride around Lake Tahoe (thinking aloud). I am definitely getting stronger on the swim.

Do anyone know of a good running plan? I want to start slow. I have been running 1 mile per workout 2-3 x per week. I know I can run more but I don't want to hurt anything.

Kristina :)
