MadCityMick - 2006-11-17 11:07 AM No Tat for me. But if I WERE to get one - I think the "140.6" would be the way to go. As to the Mdot, ultimately it's up to the person whose body is going to be tatooed - but to me it seems more appropriate to get the Mdot tatoo after completing an Mdot race. Wouldn't it sorta be like getting a "Boston Marathon" tatoo after completing any marathon? Well, not that extreme - but I think there's a point I'm trying to make somewhere.

Probably not the best example comparing Boston to any marathon.  You have to qualify for Boston, like you have to qualify for Kona IM.  For those who do Boston or Kona, yes, they do deserve a little extra "props" for their achievement.  But as far as having an M-Dot tattoo for completing a non-WTC race......140.6 is 140.6 in my opinion.  The m-dot is a symbol that is synonymous with 140.6 triathlon, whether or not WTC agrees or not.  It's just the way it is.

I dare anyone to say Silverman, Redman, Great Floridian, Grand Columbian etc are any easier than any WTC race.

Yes - and for M dot races to be official you have to finish under 17 hours, as well as meet the swim and bike cutoffs. I'm not saying these are as selective as Boston's qualifying times, but they exist. I'm not saying the M dot races are necessarily any harder than non M dot races. But there is a uniform standard at each of the M dot races - therefore they really are not synonymous with any 140.6 triathlon.

Huh?  All non-WTC iron-distance races have the same cut off times and 17 hour limit as WTC race...besides that what other "uniform standards" are you referring to?

I recently had someone ask me if my M-Dot tattoo represented a "lego".

With a completely straight face I said it was, and how did they know????

It was great!

Uuuumm... not sure about that one. I know someone who did an Iron distance race in Oklahoma... and racers were allowed to continue racing and finish the race after 17 hours.

She stated there was no cut off time. ????

yeah they had 3 people over 17 hours with times but no one over 18 hours. I do not think anyone was over 17:30. They say its 17 hours cut off and many race directors may not close it down if people are close and are about to finish. They do say you finish at your own risk after 17 hours. Now I would not get the tattoo though after I finshed it over 17 hours but once again its up to the person. Honestly that distance after 17 1/2 is still amasing. Of course my posistion may change after I complete one. Espically if I do it in 17:29:00 but lets face it though the IM cult will really get down on you if not only you complete a non WTC race and say your an ironman but do it over 17 hours.

wow, this is a really long thread.

Do whatever you want to do with your body and enjoy.
If anyone makes fun because it wasn't an Mdot race, ask them to follow you through the course and then explain how it was different.... then make fun of their mother

Whoever "she" is, she's wrong.  The official cut off time for the Oklahoma City Redman (iron distance)
race is and was 17 hours.  To my knowledge all 140.6 triathlons,
even WTC races will allow athletes to stay on the course at their own risk.
And for WTC and non-WTC races its the same, you will be listed as DNF if you
finish over 17 hours.  Again, all WTC and non-WTC 140.6 triathlons have the
same cut-off times.

Again, all WTC and non-WTC 140.6 triathlons have the
same cut-off times.

We've talked about htis in other threads, but all 140.6 races are not alike. For instance, Great Floridian has a course limit of 17.5 hours--start at 7:30am, course closes at 1am.
