It's a Mountain Tri. in June at the new river. hope to get some good advice from this site. Look forward to hearing from all. Steve Hey Steve - I did the Mountaineer tri (HIM) in its inaugural year. It rocked and was as difficult as all hell. Unfortunately I will be in Australia this year so I won't be doing it. I think they are changing the bike course because Fort Martin Hill is just too hard for people who don't live in the mountains. Not sure what the new course will be yet. Anyway, one of our club members is an advisor on the race and so we usually have the inside info. on the course ahead of time so feel free to join our yahoo group (look for morgantowntri at yahoo groups - it is free to join the email list) and ask as many questions as you like. Cheers, Leah |

Expert 997 North Central WV | Subject: RE: West Virgnia? Well it may not happen - last I heard, they were looking at alternatives. Evidently the pros want fast times more so than a hilly, challenging course. I am told that the run up 6th street is nicer than the climb we made from the rail trail in Star City up to the Law School hill in 2005. We were supposed to do our turn around inside the football stadium but the footballers were training that day - go figure! So they sent us up some goat path up the side of the hill. It sucked! Cheers

I think you can read the posts without being a member. If you want to join the group you can post to the list and ask direct questions about that tri. Cheers |

I am just gearing up for my training. The Sprint, Splash & Spin is a great first tri. It was my second, but it was a lot of fun. Hint: register early to get an earlier start time. Peace, |

Member 198 | Subject: RE: West Virginia? Hi- it's great to hear from fellow West Virginians also interested in triathlons. I'm in Charleston and did my first triathlons last year - Richwood, Morgantown Sprint Splash and Spin, and a duathlon in Kentucky. I am doing the Mountaineer Olympic distance and the SSS this year, and maybe the sprint in Huntington. The Richwood triathlon was hard, but the scenery was beautiful and everyone is super nice. The lake is freezing and the bike ride is pretty much one big climb. The run is pretty nice. I decided against it this year because I wanted to try the Mountaineer Tri, which is one week before Richwood. I'm no super-athlete by any means, so if you want to try Richwood, I say go for it! Seems like there are at least a few of us in the Kanawha Valley. I sometimes think it might be nice to have a triathlon club around here. Any thoughts? -Courtney |

I have been doing Tri's for 7 years (also raced some Marathons and a bunch of 1/2 marathons) but took last year off due to knee surgery, I am looking for someone to train with in the area. My current race schedule is something like this: March - SunTrust National Marathon April - Kinetic Half 2008 or May - New Jersey Devilman Triathlon (depending on if I do 1/2 Marathon or Full of the SunTrust) June - MedExpress 1/2 Distance of Morgantown And if things keep going in this positive direction: Sept - Chesapeakeman Ultra Triathlon - Brian Edited by bkc123 2008-02-26 9:39 PM |

New user 1 | Subject: RE: West Virgnia? Jon, New to the website and the sport. I know it has been a while since your post however I am glad that you made it back safe. You are obviously a lot more advanced than I am, so I do not want to slow you down, however I would love to hear any advice you have for someone just getting into the sport. If you ever have a light bike workout it would be cool to go on a ride too. Have you found any tri clubs in the area? Kris |

Member 30 | Subject: RE: West Virgnia? I'm relatively new to this forum, and to the sport. I haven't done a tri yet, but I love to train. I would love to do the Assateague Assault on 6/21 (sprint) as my first. I had surgery a week ago to repair a torn labrum and damaged tendons in my shoulder, so we'll see how it goes. I'm in Charles Town. Take care all. |

Member 198 | Subject: RE: West Virgnia? Hi kJuly - I'm also in Charleston and this will be my fourth triathlon season. Unfortunately, there is not a triathlon club around here. However, there is a great local bike club called the Wheelers. www.mountainstatewheelers.org They have Wednesday night rides when the weather gets warmer and weekend rides all over the area. They have groups for all levels of cyclists. Riding with a group like this is the best way to get in shape on the bike. There is also a Masters swim program at the Charleston Family YMCA that swims every Tuesday and Thursday night, and Saturday mornings. I have been swimming with them for a few years - very helpful. I am the slowest member, but everyone's super nice and it doesn't matter if you're fast or slow. The Y also has spin classes. As far as running, there is the Tallman Track Club, but I've never run with them. They have a lot of info on their website, though. http://tallmantrackclub.com/Main.htm There is a Crossfit center in Kanawha City - this is the newest rage in workout. Apparently you lift weights and do push-ups, squats and other hard stuff, then go ride your bike a few miles really fast, and repeat. I've never done it, but the people who teach it do Ironman races, so it might be a place to get some advice and training. |

Had an achilles injury in January, but my recovery has progressed to the point that my doc says I should be good to go by end of August. I need to set goals like this to keep my recovery progressing. |

You might also want to check out the Morgantown Multisport tri club. It's a good group of locals who represent a broad range of experience and such. There is also a Morgantowntri Yahoo group if you want to stay in the loop about group workouts and such. Check that out if you want. so welcome! We probably pass each other on the rail trail all the time...
Good luck with the training! |
