Subject: Interesting and Unusual Careers

Most people (especially younger ones nowadays) have had quite a variety of jobs, and I suppose one person's interesting might be another's "huh?" but ... what are some interesting careers you have had, heard of, or know people in?

My nephew, his girlfriend, and her brother were practicing in the yard tonight--they are fire performers. They have all kinds of whirlygigs and toys and sticks and bars and whatnot that they light/blow on fire and swing and dance around to, at or as part of events. It's so incredibly cool to watch.

I own a company with my father and my mother works in the office part time.  It's often interesting, sometimes unusual, and always a pain in the neck to listen to them bicker.

I dated a former carnival worker. He could ride a unicycle and juggle.

I use to work for an internet filter company and my job was to catorigize every internet site. The majority of sites are porn so my job for 90% of the time was finding, looking at, then catorgorizing porn sites. I have a broad knowlage of a lot of things I have no bussness knowing.

I surely don't consider myself a workaholic but I think I'd be pulling (no pun intended) some overtime in that position.

My BIL works for the Detroit Pistons as a video manager and gets to travel with the team. He was also a basketball team manager at FSU during the back to back championships and has the rings to prove it.

My Cousin is a music manager for bands like Train, Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco and has a couple of new bands he discovered that have some albums dropping in the next few weeks.

Do you mean like walking beans, or castrating hogs?  Did walking beans to help buy my own bicycle and motorcycle and car?  Also worked at a roller skating rink to keep things safe and under control, yet I was only 14 when I started.

I'm qualified to work as an AI specialist in the pig industry if that counts.

Insert witty joke here of how many times it comes in use in my current role in HR...

When I was in my 20's I worked for a company and we did 21-30 day treks along the Appalachian Trail with prison inmates as part of their rehabilitation.  I have never laughed and cried as hard as I did that year.

Ever try to ultrasound a non-sedated cat? That can get pretty interesting.

Was involved in R&D for a human medical device company...saw quite a few surgeries: open heart, hip replacements, saw the lower right lobe of the lung removed because of cancer, amputation was weird, but the best/worst was the guy that started waking up mid-surgery because the anesthetist had his head up his ***. I pointed out that the heart rate/breaths per minute was rising and I saw the guy's foot twitch twice. He kept reading his book. When the patient started moaning and gagging on the tube, the guy finally increased the anesthetic. Those doctors were PO'd. They were working on his elbow and wrist - some kind of tendon surgery.

I marketed live, dead and dried maggots for a while. Let me just say that the Explorers Club annual dinner has a very interesting hors d'oeurves party.

And I didn't think it was possible to have a less sexy job than marketing hearing aids. LOL

Best I have is a number of years in a local cover band. Anytime you get (have?) to work with drunk people, you can count on interesting. That job has provided me with a few good stories to tell at parties. And some experiences that were not fun at the time, but are entertaining stories in retrospect.

But I have nothing that involves fire. And I do agree with you, that would be really cool to watch.

My job involves the packing, crating, handling, displaying and care of art and objects that are, quite literally, irreplaceable. Now, this sounds all sorts of awesome, and for the most part it is, but there's also the less fun part of identifying varied carpet beetle casings and frass, cleaning of bug traps, worrying about building structure, HVAC, light levels, etc.

And then there's the art itself. Handling a van Gogh, a Rembrandt, Degas, photos by my hero W. Eugene Smith...all amazing and thrilling. But then there's the parts that are gross. Things painted with feces, hair of all varieties (read that how you will), blood, structures made of bone, etc. And then, with most of those things, there's legislation detailing how these things must be dealt with.

Always interesting, somewhat cool, rarely as glamorous as they make it in the movies.

I write GIS mapping software for a living.  It's truly fun as I learn about every conceivable thing that could be mapped.  And fortunately I eventually become a SME in many areas.

My roommate in college was an animal husbandry major.  His summer internship was
"assisting" in the collection of bull semen.

Yes, in some cases it was exactly as your mind pictures it. I didn't believe him until I visited him at work one day.

I had a few interesting ones -

fruit picker ($0.08/bushel for cherries),

metals plater ($4/hr to mess around with 500 gallon vats of acid)

dog handler at greyhound racetrack (any "samples" must be collected before the race so that they could be analyzed for PEDs)

It's kind of funny how sometimes you don't think it's that interesting until you mention it to someone.
My first job out of high school was somewhat typical to anyone in the community where I grew up.  But I mention it here in Utah and they look at me like I come from another country.

I worked at a local fishdock/boat launch/bait shop/gas station/local grocery/deli.  Yes, it was not unlikely for me to be tossing sacks of crawfish a local fisherman was selling, then wash my hands to make his lunch.  Or count crickets for the bass fisherman at 5am in the morning, then make breakfast sandwiches for them.  (Did you know Perry Williams LOVES Boudin sandwiches on toast?   )
Most cashiers ask if you need stamps or ice... I'd ask if you remembered your boat launch ticket, and ice
