Hey, running2far!  Lifetime's my first OLY as well.  I did the swim leg of a relay there last year and that's what hooked me into tris.

You're nearly guaranteed that wetsuits won't be allowed.  The water's almost always too warm in Lake Nokomis.  The bike course is quite nice.  I rode it on Sunday and look forward to not fighting traffic or stopping at intersections.  There isn't much in the way of hills either so you can pretty much just crank the whole way.  The run course is dead flat.  Two loops around Lake Nokomis.

Lets start praying for good weather now.  Last year it was 90F and humid as hell when the pros took off at 8:00 AM.  By the time most OLY competitors were coming in, it was in the upper 90s with a heat index in the 100's.  I'm hoping for 80F, low humidity, and calm.

See y'all in less than three weeks.  YIKES!

Cheers!

Tom

Best of luck to you guys. My wife is volunteering for the race. I think she gets to work in the elite tent, if there is such a thing. If so I'll probably try to wedge myself in as a volunteer as well. Thing that has kept me from doing this one as a sprint is I heard people were sitting around for a few hours waiting for there wave start last year.

fried eggs off the blacktop comes to mind.. that one bridge out and back is terribly hot in the run segment... the swim is awsome and bike is just great.. watching the pros is very inspiring ... that run can be pretty hot though... overall, this race is a blast...

Everybody on your knees praying its not going to be this bad.  If it is, please everyone make sure you're hydrating well throughout.  We don't want to see anyone passing out on the course.

We can probably bank on NO wetsuits.    I'm doing the sprint distance (at 10 am), so maybe I won't be shooting for a PR...    eh

Good luck everyone!  Agree with Match--hydrate well and take in LOTS 'o sodium...

I can't believe it's going to be so hot...I'm going to be one giant salt crystal by the time I finish the sprint.  At least I can blame my slow run on the heat though :-) I know it says sunny but I think a light rain around 11 am might be nice...

Hi I will be doing the sprint, which won't start until 10am!

Am debating whether I should wear my black trisuit or my blue/silver/white trisuit.... Black one more slimming, but absorps more heat. Hmmm...

Those sample electrolyte capsule from tribuff will sure come in handy.

Hi Kids,

I was just out at Gear West and heard that there's rumor that all age group OLY participants are going to be moved to the sprint course because of the weather forecast.  Just thought you might want to prepare yourselves mentally or otherwise in case that comes to pass.

Cheers!

wow...everyone on the sprint course?  would that mean that we'd get to start earlier...cuz i wouldn't mind starting at 9 rather than 10...though the increase in competition is a little scary...but i feel better swimming with more people in the water so the freshwater MN lake sharks will have less of a chance of picking me off........i was just fine until the muskie ate the neighbors dog...just fine....

I couldn't agree more.  I've been preparing for the OLY at THIS RACE for essentially the last 12 months.  The heat would certainly slow us all down and cause us to exercise greater caution but that's all part of the sport.  The conditions are what they are.  We've become such a risk averse society and it drives me nuts.  They raced IMMoo in the same conditions last year and that's just a little bit longer race.  OK, rant off...

I totaly agree with you Matchman. I'm so tired of overly protecting everyone from every little risk out there. Yes, we need to be carefull, but how about a little common sense. I'm a P.E. teacher and I have had 3 different partents call me in the last two years questioning weather or not I should be taken students outside for class when it is so hot. On one occasion the parent was complaing about a class that started at 8:15. High temp for that day? 82 degrees.

My family keeps worrying...as though I'd attempt to do the race with just a dixie cup of water or something.  But after repeatedly checking the weather reports I noticed that the heat index (or whatever the current term for it is) is only a degree or two above the actual temp. and that by the time I'll be finishing the sprint, it'll be only about 92...which is high but the humidity tomorrow is in the 30s and low 40s....that's not bad...I'd rather run in slightly warmer dry air than the soup I've been training in back home for the past 3 weeks (which had a heat index around the low to mid 90s).  It looked like for the olympic people that it would still be in the 80s when they finished.  I know I'll need to hydrate hydrate hydrate...but it's the humidity that really kills my workouts, no so much the temperature.

The trouble is in this town we have 4 different major news channels that are all competing with each other and every one of them has 4 or 5 weather geeks that love to get as much face time as they possibly can. They will make any story as sensational as they can milk it for in order to get ratings. As I said earlier, yes I agree there are some dangers to the heat, but you just need to be carefull and use common sense. As I flipped through news reports last night you would have thought the end was coming the way some were reporting it. I just hope you all have a great time at one of the premier triiathlons of the year. As a side note, our triathlon club was asking for volunteers to work the tri about a month ago. My wife and I decided one of us would do it. She won out and is going to volunteer. Found out about two weeks ago her volunteer spot is working with the pro's. That sucks, man I would love to do that. Now we got an e-mail last night asking if she could transport one of the pro's to the airport right after the race. She has a bike box that needs to go also. DID YOU HEAR THAT...SHE!!! Have you seen what these pro triathlete women look like? My God I could have been that close to a goddess. O.K. I'll settle down now. Plus I think I hear my wife coming, have to sign off before she reads this or she might ki

Moving everybody to the sprint course? How??

Anyway, I will be there at around 630am, an hour before T closes. Once I got my bike set up, I think I will find a shade somewhere and hide (with my bf) until my wave starts while playing my Gameboy. Will try to look for Sparco and Matchman.

Good luck everyone!!!
