MOBILE, Alabama – A third cyclist in two weeks has been killed on or near Springhill Avenue.
According to a news release by Mobile police, a cyclist was hit by a vehicle and killed while trying to cross the major Mobile artery on Tuesday afternoon.
The unidentified man was attempting to cross the avenue from the north side, in-between Ann and Michael Donald streets, around 5:15 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound, it said. He was subsequently transported to the University of South Alabama Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured and charges are not pending, according to police.
The deceased is the third man to be killed on a bicycle since Oct. 23, when 48-year-old Joey O'Brien was shot and killed near the U.S. Post Office at Springhill and Broad Street, after volunteering at a local church. Police have ruled his death a homicide and no arrests have been made.
A week later, 61-year-old Terry Lee Crawford was stabbed to death in Lyons Park at Springhill and Catherine Street. His death is also unsolved, and on Wednesday Crawford's sister reached out to the public in hopes of finding information leading to the Vietnam veteran's killer.
Memorial Ghost Bikes have been anonymously erected near the sites where the two men were killed.
