It occurred to me that I might really be more comfortable in traditional bike clothing and run clothing. 5 minutes to change will definitely not affect my finish time. So... 1. Can we change in T1, T2 (privately or semi-private) 2....and this is important....should we? Thanks Found the answer: --> http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... I currently don't wear traditional bike shorts, but I was thinking about putting the traditional padded bike shorts over my tri shorts for the bike. 112 miles is a long way! I wonder if anyone has done this? |

I just finished my first IM, Arizona, on Sunday and I changed both times and it was worth every minute. I just wore swim jammer suit under the wetsuit. They have a changing tent and you grab your bike gear bag from a volunteer, go in the tent, change into dry bike shorts/jersey and go. After returning from bike, grab the next bag and into the changing tent - felt great to run in normal loose running shorts. I guess if you are racing where minutes count, you won't bother to change, but if not - an extra 5 minutes to change is totally worth the comfort over such a long day. Good luck. |

Master 2621 Almaden Valley, San Jose, California | Subject: RE: Can I change in T1, T2? I bet this gets asked all the time I've done 4 IMs. The first three, I wore my tri shorts and top under my wetsuit, just stripped out of the wetsuit in T1. On all 3, I changed my SHORTS to running shorts in T2 ( don't like running in my tri-shorts for THAT long!! ). T1 is truly weather-driven. My last IM was Lake Tahoe. I just wore a swimsuit under my wetsuit for the swim, and did a complete change to (about 5 different layers) to my bike clothes in T1. Changed the shorts out again in T2. Staying dry and warm was paramount - for the first time ever. It's a LONG race. Take a minute or two to get comfortable for your 112 mile bike or your marathon!! Really, I think much of your decision will be weather-related. Even the pros did full changes at IMLT's T1. It was 30 degrees - no way to get on your bike wet!!!

I'm the same as this - I just added a bike jacked over my tri top due to weather and a change of socks and t-shirt for the run. I don't see the point of spending ages in transition as I think you get colder and stiffer the longer you hang around! |

Iron Donkey 38643 , Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Can I change in T1, T2? I bet this gets asked all the time As far as IM WI, yes, you CAN change your racing attire in transition (T1 and T2). Regarding any other Ironman-branded events, though, I believe you "should" be able to change your racing attire, too. Your second question, "should we?", is not totally understood. Changing your racing attire (whether top, shorts, etc., a combination of them, or all of your attire), is ENTIRELY YOUR decision. Whatever YOU feel comfortable with or doing, that is YOUR choice. Many people are in and out of T1 without changing out of their Speedos/whatever and don on their helmet, etc., while others do a FULL outfit change to be dry and comfortable. "Should you"? It's your choice. "Can you"? I believe you can. "Will you"? You will make the decision. My opinion? I think it's worth the comfort if you are MOP/BOP not shooting for a spot or big goal, or are a Pro/Elite that can afford that extra couple of seconds. Just a little helpful advice - I would suggest practicing if you are not comfortable with feeling "hurried", or fumbling trying to get a specific item on (like your socks on sweaty or wet feet), or maybe practice to remember not to forget anything. Good luck! |
