When it came to training we had a few people my age. We would go out to eat after and one guy who was 63 would laugh sometimes because most times I was closer in age to the 5 year son of one of the runners than I was to the next nearest runner. The dad was 55. |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: struggling being a triathlete in my early 20s.. Caleb - we probably live close. My son and a few of his buddies ride the trails around Collinsville/Edwardsville/etc. quite often. They are only 16, but they are ate up with triathlon and you'll become a much faster rider if you spend some time with them. I can't ride with them anymore, and they have the same complaints you do, only most of their friends think they're just crazy. I realize that 16 is not your age, but they're much older then 16 in "triathlon years".....a couple of them overall podium every local sprint/oly distance race they compete in......just giving you some background so you don't dismiss their age......they'd really enjoy having more guys to ride with. They will typically ride/run every weekend over there when they are in town and not racing. If you are interested send me a PM and I'll get you guys in touch. |

I'm in the same boat as ya, I'm 21 and my friends would much rather get trashed on the weekend, sleep all day and do it again that night. It's not for me. Not much luck getting my friends into training for a 5k, haven't given up yet though. I know once they do it they'll get hooked just like you and I are. When it comes down to it though, you know what you love to do I went through the results of one of the sprint tris I want to do in the spring, to see how hard it would be to place in my AG. There were no participants from age 20-24. Looks like I might have first place this year! |

New user 84 | Subject: RE: struggling being a triathlete in my early 20s.. I would be happy to have anyone of any age to train with. The tri club near me isn't that close and I work 7 days a week on 2nd shift, so all the stuff they do I generally don't even have the chance to be a part of. I'm 24, an engineer. I think that while there might not be as many triathletes in the 20-29 age group, 1. it is increasing every year and 2. is extremely competitive because there are fewer. The female 25-29 age group is highly skilled. BT is great, it's nice to have these forums to have people to talk to who understand, who share the same joy, passion, frustrations and everything else that goes along with juggling life and this crazy hobby. |

Expert 1244 | Subject: RE: struggling being a triathlete in my early 20s.. Look at the races you have competed in, take the peoples name from your age group and try looking them up on Facebook. Stalker like, but they may also be looking for someone to train with |

Im 24 and just started getting into endurance events over the last year and have my first triathlon coming up in June. My roommate is a runner, but usually only trains for running from late spring to fall. |

Originally posted by audiojan You may struggle to find triathletes your age, but I bet you can find runners, cyclists and swimmers your age. Talk to your LBS and find out if they have a team, join them for training and do TT's with them (you probably already have the bike for it! and being a triathlete, you do have the skills for it). Yeah, totally agree with this. I'm 21 and nobody my age does triathlons. But I DO have several runner friends and a few friends that are swimmers. This also provides the advantage of training with people who are VERY good at one sport, which makes me push harder. The free swim coaching sessions are also nice. |

Expert 1224 Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa. | Subject: RE: struggling being a triathlete in my early 20s.. To the OP'er..... I'm in the 35-39 AG and I don't have the same problem that you do. However, we have one "kid" who is 24 in our tri club that works out with us as well. He says almost the exact same thing! By no means does he not like working out with all of us. He just doesn't share in as many real world challenges that we do... kids, mortgage, aging parents, etc. If it's any solace, there is a guy in Iowa who completely shares your pain.

1660 | Subject: RE: struggling being a triathlete in my early 20s.. It's hard for young folks to get into triathlon. The costs of the gear and training can be pretty prohibitive for those new to the sport in their early 20s. There is no way I would have been able to afford to train and race the way I wanted to in my early 20s due to financial reasons. It made far more sense for me at the time to just go all-running where I could do it with no compromise, rather than scrounge endlessly just to get bare bones gear and facilities for triathlon. |

If it were easy, they'd call it just running. New tag line? |

434 | Subject: RE: struggling being a triathlete in my early 20s.. Some of us are struggling in our late 50s! (though probably for different reasons!). Keep up your effort, and enjoy the company of the "old guys." You may smoke us (or not), but we may be helpful to encourage some of your slower friends that want to get involved (by giving them some competition at their pace). It is nice to share a sport/activity that is not segregated by career, where you live, etc. My "real sport" is ocean racing (sailing), and it is a lot of fun to be a part of a crew that bonds and works together - even though some of the guys have blue collar jobs and others are high powered white collar guys and millionaires. |

Yes, if you are riding with a bunch of older guys I suggest riding up and saying something like, "what's up ladies?" That always breaks the ice and gets the ride off to a good workout. |

I didn't mean for this post to be taken too seriously like I hated what I had. Lol |

Also point out how impressed you are that they can still do this even though their hair is starting to grey; when you are that old you hope you can still do this too. |
