Pro 6191 | Subject: Complicated Travel. Tips? Secrets? I've got some interesting travel coming up, PA to AZ with dog, back to AZ solo, then on to MO. Dog needs to be driven home, it's about 35 hours of driving across the country. (AZ to PA) About 20 hours into that drive (MO) is the location where I'll be moving for a few months. But before I move there, I need to return to AZ without the dog for two weeks, then immediately proceed to MO. One way car rentals are expensive. I've toyed around with leaving the car in MO on my way back to AZ, flying there (I won't need a car), and then flying back to cut ~40 hours of driving. I've been stalking this, hoping that a "Rolling out of AZ" special to the north east pops up around that time frame: http://www.cruiseamerica.com/rent/hot_deals/# it'd be more in gas, but not needing hotels/campsites/friend's couches would be amazing. Is there any resource you know of that I'm not using, especially for one way vehicle rentals?

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Complicated Travel. Tips? Secrets? Might check out U-Haul (or similar) one-way rentals? They seem to be more setup for one-ways and they have standard trucks available (not just moving trucks)... |

Pro 6191 | Subject: RE: Complicated Travel. Tips? Secrets? Ooohhh... Thanks Lisa! Hadn't thought of that one. ETA: U-Haul won't let me pick a pick-up truck for a "move" that far online. I'll give them a call anyway and see. Edited by ratherbeswimming 2014-03-04 12:21 PM |

No one "charges a drop-off fee" - but Budget is right in line with everyone else with a $1200+ cost for the one way rental. It just jumps from like $25-20 per day to like $120 |

Yes, I've flown dogs a number of times, mostly puppies, but grown dogs twice. Why would you have to sedate him? Will he go in a crate? |

Champion 7547 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Complicated Travel. Tips? Secrets? Amtrak has a train that runs through Tucson and up to Chicago, so it comes through St. Louis (I believe). They don't allow pets though. I've heard of programs that pair drivers with vehicles (maybe an RV manufacturer trying to get an RV from the midwest to Arizona). Not sure of the name of it though. Even in an RV, you might still need a campsite for the night. You could get hassled parking the RV in a rest area or parking lot. Consider a round-trip car rental and then shipping your car as part of the relocation?

I'm considering a round-trip rental because my car hit 108000 miles today - not sure how well it'll fare on another XC trip The link I posted sends refurb RVs from the factory in Mesa, AZ... I'm hoping something magically appears - or that someone knows about something else similar. Oh, and WalMart lets you park RVs overnight |

Maybe I'll put him in a crate and take him to the airport just to see what happens. If anyone hears that Tucson Airport gets shut down for a crazy dog on the loose... it wasn't me. I swear. |

Extreme Veteran 861 Northbridge, Massachusetts | Subject: RE: Complicated Travel. Tips? Secrets? A couple of things we encountered since we just did a cross country trip with 4 cats and a dog in November. (San Diego to Boston) We tried to rent a one way motor home, but they are very select about where they will send a one way motor home. We tried all of the RV rental places and they would not consider it. They basically want you to rent the RV and drive it to a location where they have a need for the unit and if your "need" doesn't reconcile with their "need" it will be a no go so reserve early. They also go through a process when you go to reserve it that can take up to 48 hours for an approval to rent so plan ahead. It has to go up the chain of command for a one way rental approval. As long as it is one dog who will travel with you in the cab, then the rental truck could be an option. We did not use that option for the pets because there is no air/heat back there and did not want the pets in there even though they were all in crates. They will force you to pay for a minimum number of days regardless of whether you turn in it early. They don't want you driving recklessly in order to save money. Budget was the most price friendly when we did it and hubby got in a slight accident in the snow and they just looked at the damage and shrugged. The guy at the rental place basically said "sh*t happens" and sent us on our merry way. We did not even buy the rental insurance. Depending on time of year, I would never fly my pet and then still not sure I would do it since you hear so many horror stories of them dying in extreme temperatures. Three of our four cats are too fat to fly coach...LOL. Has to be 20 lbs or less including the carrier for Jet Blue and they all exceed that without the carrier. Not sure what the other airlines have as a limit to fly in the cabin. Shannon |

I looked.... the number of pets that die in flight avg. about 30 for every 600,000. I bet the percentage is MUCH higher, per day, for dogs just walking around being dogs,. Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Complicated Travel. Tips? Secrets? To my knowledge, you can't sedate an animal for travel in the cargo area, only in cabin. At least it's not recommended. It leaves them more vulnerable to stress from heat/cold variation and they could be in real trouble if the oxygen levels drop even a little. I'll probably have to fly my cats back from Vietnam at some point; one is too big to go in cabin on the airlines that fly out of here (limit is 11 pounds, including carrier; just kitty is 13), and there's no way they'll be sedated. Food bribe should get a critter into a carrier, plus leave the crate around for a few weeks so they can use it as a resting area and get used to it first. Edited by Hot Runner 2014-03-04 6:00 PM |

Pro 4482 NJ | Subject: RE: Complicated Travel. Tips? Secrets? I've flown dogs commercially and never had a problem. There are a number of pet relocation services some of which offer ground transport. Never used the ground option but it might be worth checking out. If however the dog is anxious about travel in general, ground transport will extend the amount of time he's stressed. Eta. You didn't mention timing but airlines have restrictions on the temps/months they will take pets in cargo. PHX would be a market that would have some limits. I'm assuming your travel is coming up fairly soon so this prob won't be an issue. Edited by kcarroll 2014-03-04 8:52 PM |

I tried that when I moved - I set the crate back up. He NEVER went in it. ever. Crazy dog! And that echoes what I read about why sedation isn't the best idea. |
