Tell me about your DNF, why? What happened and what would have prevented it?

Another swimmer was in distress and was so far off course that the kayaks and lifeguards didn't see him.  I swam to him while waving and calling for assistance, finally getting the attention of one of the kayaks.  I hung around until they got the guy loaded on a jet ski.

We were in the last starting wave and by that time were so far behind the race that I just decided to swim in an call it a day.

Woke up at 3am before the race with terrible stomach cramps.  Every time I tried to drink or eat anything during breakfast the cramps came back.  I blamed nerves (my first long distance race - 3.8k/180k/21.1k) and started the race anyway.  Swim went fine but once out on the bike the cramps came back as soon as I tried to eat or drink and since biking 180k with no water or calories is generally a bad idea I bailed at the 35k mark and turned around.

What would have prevented it?  Not having dinner with the in-laws on the Friday night - they all had the same thing the night before my race!

First HIM in my second season of tri

Florida 70.3. Took on 0 calories during the bike and run but drank lots and lots of water.
I was working hard, too hard. I lost consciousness with about 3 miles to go on the run

The guy behind me stopped, was a doctor and stayed with me until medical team arrived. I remember regaining consciousness, telling him to go but he would not, he stuck around a good 20minutes until medical staff arrived. I ruined his race, and have no idea who he is. i wish I could have thanked him.

Diagnosis was hyponatremia. My brain was mush. I did not know my phone number and was trying to explain to the dr what I couldn't take on glucose (I am diabetic). But I made no sense at all.

The next year I did the same race and went to check if my buddy was in the med tent. The Dr remembered me from the previous year and described me as one of the most f'd up people he had met, based on how 'out of it' I was.

I think I still have the Garmin of my run......long pause.....and ride in the gold cart....and long pause in the med tent.

It was my first HIM and the episode haunts me today. Everytime I am at the edge, I wonder if I am about to go over.

A month ago...both calves cramped up as I went to jump in the beginning of a sprint swim. I'd lined up in the front and got pummeled by the entire field as they all swam over me while I was trying to figure out if I could go on or not. Swam through it painfully and slowly, hobbled to the bike, thought I'd shook it off finally by the end of the bike, but tried to stretch and the right one ripped. Needed help getting off the bike, couldn't walk. PT for a few weeks after and still don't fully trust it. Very humbling experience.

Crashed the bike less than 2 miles into my first triathlon. Fractured my clavicle, tore the ligament in there, and had surgery to get all back together. I now have a nice plate across my clavicle and a teflon cord repaired the ligament. This was in July 2012. In hindsight, I was not prepared for the bike.

RNR DC marathon 2012 ... got to the race late (Metro broke down), hectic start, went out too fast, called it a day at mile 18.

I was at that marathon - the metro systems was chaos. we started to get there super early, got there late after metro was very slow, then they offloaded our car, and, well, you know what a mess it was

someone dislocated their shoulder on the swim so being a ortho, I stopped during the swim to stabilize the shoulder. I was still in the race, but on the bike, a woman in front of me was on the side of the road at the start of a hill having heat issue and there weren't any volunteers or aid stations around so I stopped and called for an ambulance and stayed with her until they arrived.

70.3 Kansas last year. a mile out of t1 my derailer sheared off my bike. ran back to t1 made my tri bike a single speed. made it 25 miles before the chain couldn't take it any more. and snapped. started stripping parts off my bike as the bus of shame came across other riders on the side of the road, rear wheel, and all my tubes and co2 cartridges were out on the course to the finish line.

Got 300 yards into an OWS race last  year and decided it was too rough for me . Turned around and swam back to the shore and turned in my chip. It was the best decision for  that day. I've done multiple IM and HIM races so it isn't that I can't swim. I know my limits and it didn't feel safe for me to swim.

Probably should have DNFed IMTX11. I snuck out of a medical tent (on course) when they were double bagging a guy that came in after me. I hadn't turned in my chip yet or told them that I'd been vomiting. In hindsight I probably should have DNFed that race. I'm still not sure why I bothered to run train for that IM. Should have just walked around our town drunk and disoriented to duplicate what it felt like on race day. lol..

I've never DNF'd a tri but have twice wimped out of the swim and switched to the du--once the night before the race after an attempt at swimming in 58 degree water with air temps in 40's (after 30 minutes I still couldn't breathe normally) and once the morning of the race due to cold water (non-wetsuit race) and very high surf. In both cases I had lots of company and organizers encouraged anyone with doubts to switch, and let us do it for free due to marginal conditions. In running, I have DNF'd once--I dropped out of a 10K track race in college. I had a 104 fever but the coach didn't seem to believe me and wanted me to "start and see how you feel". I made it 800m before becoming too dizzy to run. That's it so far from 35 years of running and 4 years of tri--knock on wood!

Yep, I was there too.. this was the metro scene about 15 min after that race started:

My DNF was Eagleman 2010 when the swim was ridiculous and a bunch of people - myself included - got back from the bike to find a notice that we were DQ'ed after the swim and not to run.

First IM at Arizona 2008.   About 1/2 mile into the swim, every time I turned my head to breathe, the world kept spinning around.  Got worse and worse until I could barely keep my head out of the water.   Severe vertigo, had to be pulled from the water.

No hard data, but appears to have been a sodium imbalance affecting my inner ear.   Because it was going to be hot, pre loaded with some salt pills.  Spent the day in a dark hotel room instead of racing.   Dizziness lasted a few days.

No way to expect or prevent it, other than Nothing new on race day!

Bike crash. Kept going, had a flat. I finally looked at my arm and leg and decided the amount of blood would probably force the med team to look at me in T2 without favor. So, I called it a day.

My DNF came after I finished a HIM in 8:15. where the RD told me earlier in the year basically no time limit like last year where I finished in 8:45. Thunder storm came through so I took the bike easier. Cross the finish line and found they pulled the timing mat at 8:00 and claimed later they had a published finish cut off time at 8 hours. No one was able to show me anywhere the cut off published.

My first Triathlon. Not a DNF, but only one spot better. Dead Freaking Last.

The first 200 yards of the 800 yard swim took their toll on me as I was being hit, touched, kicked and I was hitting, touching and kicking people. This wasn't physically issue, but having never experienced a group swim, it was a mental issue. I kicked a guy in the eye. Hard. I slowed to apologize, and he said, "It was my fault, I swam up on you, stop apologizing and just swim!"

400 yards later, only 200 yards from shore, my legs cramped. Both simultaneously. I slowed to a snails pace (didn't know they could swim...) and massaged my legs with one hand while swimming with the other. Managed to loosen them up and finished the swim.

T1 went well. Better than I expected, but as I was mounting my bike, I got rear ended and raked my left calf with my pedal. I mis-shifted on the hills, destroying my momentum twice and messing with my head and then cramped up again 8 miles into the 12 mile ride. I could barely move my legs and spent a lot of time standing on my pedals stretching my calves rather than pedaling.

Half a mile into the run my thighs cramped. I almost quit. I was in severe pain and the only reason I kept going was because nearly every person who passed me during the swim, bike and run encouraged me to "keep going", "You can do this", etc. I felt I owed it to them, but I also owed it to myself. Three months of training at speeds twice as fast as I was moving made moving so slowly very difficult mentally, but I kept moving.

I finished dead last in my age group, and fourth from last overall.

The next day I went to the doctor and asked about the severe leg cramps... It turns out that the cholesterol meds I was put on 3 weeks ago are known for causing severe leg cramps in some users. So, it wasn't me after all, well, it wasn't a lack of training or preparation anyway.

Lesson learned: No more drug changes during the summer months. Here's to hoping race #2 goes much better...

First DNF was during my first bike road race.  Sidewall cut caused me two flats and a makeshift boot using a gel wrapper didn't work.

I tried to DNF my second marathon at mile 25.  I completely bonked, my legs turned to jelly and I couldn't even stand up without holding on to something.  I even pee'd myself for a few seconds with absolutely no control over it.  I originally thought it was a heat stroke or something and told the volunteers that I was done.  After 20ish minutes, and eating some chocolate, a tangerine, and a sprite that was given to me...my legs were at least able to hold me up and I walked the last mile to the finish with a cop on a mountain bike escorting me in.
