Erin, I think "teeth" is a first ever for the DL!   Way to be an over achiever

There are way too many shoulder injuries around here these days too!!

GOOOOO RACING MANATEES GOOOOOOOOO!!!

DL'ers - get better, m'kay?

So.... it looks like I might be getting talking into, or possibly talking others into IMTX for 2015...

I'm kind of sad that I won't be doing IMWI with a whole bunch of friends, but I guess the bonus is that by getting my race done early, I can go and volunteer and see them all that way!!

IMTX was on my short list if I was gonna take that step for 2015. Coach is doing it. Thinkin DH wasn't thrilled with the idea.

Why would he care what Coach is doing?  You think he's not thrilled about training time you'd put in?

As for IM thinking...IMAZ visit still possibility this year?

Quick non sequiter:  the title of today's Wonderword word game (http://www.merriam-webster.com/game/uclick/wonderword.htm) is "Shopping is Great Cardio."  Is there a category in "sports" on the BT training log for that?

Depending on the person and type of shopping, I found the following categories could fit quite nicely:

adventure racing

agility

boot camp conditioning

cheerleading

divine breathing

orienteering

power walking

skipping

wrestling

I've always thought about it, and when our oldest dog was a youngster I "trained" him on the play equipment at a park near our house, but I've never done it for real. Would love to someday. Two of our dogs would totally enjoy it!

RACE YOUR LITTLE HEARTS OUT, DEAR MANATEES! ummm....please don't take that literally

Yanti, you just had to go and be different with an HM, didn't you?

I don't think I can technically qualify for DL...unless I'm trying for a world's strongest woman by pulling a truck with my teeth.

Yes you do.  You had to spend how long at the dentist and get how many needles stuck in your mouth?  Surely that's affected your ability to talk about your training, which is integral to the sport!

You should try Nosework instead.  It's essentially civilian sniffer dogs, based on the training they do for military and police dogs.  We do it with one of our border collies--it totally wears her out (success!!)--and we're going to start with the other one soon.  It's way cheaper and there's a lot less wear and tear on you and your dogs but there's still competition and camaraderie.  All you need are some boxes, some essential oils (birch, clove and anise), some Q-Tips, and a little metal container thingy that you get from the trainer.  Check out K9nosework.com if you're interested.  You could even have your kids help you hide the stuff for the dogs to find.

As for coaching ...

I think I could write a whole book on my thoughts and feelings on this as it relates to me. Ultimately you have to think of your goals and the hurdles you may encounter and whether or not you think a coach is better suited to get you over those.

Something I cannot stress enough is that I think taking the time to figure out A. What you are doing and why as it relates to training. Why am I running 800s and why is the rest x seconds. If you can understand those things and how they specifically make you a better runner (or swimmer or cyclist) it's a hell of a lot easier to manage your own training plan. And B. Know thy self Understand what easy is to you, what hard is and what tired is. Figuring out what the start of an injury feels like vs discomfort.

As for fancy things like V02 Max testing? I think they can be a tool, sure. But they just can't tell you the whole story. Honestly, in my opinion racing is your very best indicator of how things are going. Because the physical part is not the only factor. I have found this article really sums up what I am talking a bout: http://www.runnersworld.com/runners-stories/why-science-and-running-dont-always-mix

Good read. I liked her response to one guy's comments..."And so far, out of the four different scientists I've worked with, only one could put the information in it's proper place for me, to be used as a tool but not as a definition of my ability."

I think most AG athletes know the numbers are just a tool. We aren't looking to be the next Kara Goucher or TeeJay VanGarderen.

I've not done a V02 test and the guys at P2M only use it as a discussion of threshold and how a person can, through training, push those boundaries. I have enjoyed using heart rate, but I know it's limitations based on fatigue, weather, nutrition, sleep yada yadayada. But, again, it's a tool. I know that riding in zone 3 is more effective for gaining strength/endurance more so than zone 2, but I also know that zone 2 has it's place in training as well.

I've seen so many things so all over the map that I would actually hesitate on the "only tools" part. Many may not be really sure how to use them, or what tools are supposed to do.

And back to Lauren's thoughts, the science does keep improving and future predictors could become more accurate, but we still have to do the work to get there. That part won't change and is what so many of us like about the things we do. It's not so much about becoming the best, but learning how to be the best we can.

Yeah ... things have just been so unpredictable, health-wise and life-wise that I really haven't been able to train with any kind of consistency. And even though the thyroid/postviral issues are slowly slowly getting better, each time I get sick (which is often, in a vicious catch-22 that's exacerbated by my own idiocy and eagerness ... I know those of you who have known me a long time or heck even a very short time are rolling your eyeballs, just like everyone around me does!) ...

... each time I get sick sets me back a bit again as well. Whether what Stace Face/Kingsley/I had was a bad cold or a flu remains in question ... Kingsley was flat-out for over a week (for him, that is a HUGE deal ... bad cold, he can just suck it up and get going anyway, but we were really steamrolled) and I continue to wake up exhausted with tons of joint pain.

And the weight thing. Good thing is, I've been eating really healthy fresh colorful balanced stuff, throughout the day, reasonable portions ... unfortunately it's not little enough to lose weight. It's not enough, frankly, to sustain a high volume (never mind with periods of intensity as in swimming) workouts; any less and it takes every ounce of willpower just to get out of bed and run errands and work and do necessary stuff. So I eat well, eat as I need to, don't fight the hunger in addition to everything else I'm trying to do.

So that's just where I'm at, and I'm happy. I'm trying to let go of wishing it were a different way. The next few weeks' schedule is dizzying but I am just thrilled with all the adventures and opportunities. I know I won't finish at IMMY but hey, I get to do the fun parts of the course (the swim and the Monkey Zones SNEEEERKsnort eeeh eeeh oooh ah ah). The 10K lake swim is a fully sponsored event for us--open water swimming (like cycling and running) has just exploded in Indonesia and we have such amazing venues for it all over the country, so this is an inaugural event that we'll be advising and promoting based on our experience to try and turn it into a marquee OWS event in Asia. Yes, the location is remote (as remote as places like Taupo, NZ and Busselton, Aus) but it's amazing and also good for endurance sports.

16 September          Kingsley arrives in Bali
18 September          K & I travel Bali to Lake Toba (the world's largest/deepest volcanic lake and yes, it's active) full day's travel, it's remote
20 September          Lake Toba 10K swim (it's at altitude ... brrrrr)
21 September          K & I travel Lake Toba back to Bali
22 September          Kingsley travels Bali back to Perth
23 September          I travel Bali to Jakarta
25 September          I travel Jakarta to Langkawi, Malaysia
27 September          Ironman Malaysia
29 September          I travel Langkawi back to Jakarta
03 October              Tina, Mutti & I travel to Germany

It's insane after that, too, but more on the order of every couple weeks instead of every couple days.

Oh yeah ... right after I got back from Perth (a couple days ago) I had to fly out to Jogja (where our shrimp farms are) to work. In order to fit in some training, my sister and I had planned to bike out to the shrimp farms Thursday morning. We got about 10min down the road when a motorcycle pulled into the road off a side road and took off down the street--THE WRONG WAY and right into my sister. She was ahead of me, which she is so grateful for because that means I didn't get splattered, and I'm feeling guilty I wasn't leading the way!

It was incredibly scary and spectacular. My sister flew over the motorbike, sailed several metres and landed in the middle of a street where traffic was going both ways (and frankly every which way, this is Indonesia). The bicycle did a couple flips in the air and landed away from my sister on the other side of the street.

The azz hole motorcyclist just kept going. But so many vehicles on the street, as well as bystanders from little shops and houses on the street stopped to help.

First thing, the bike will be okay :P

My sister will be okay, but she's got the kind of road rash where blood was already pouring onto the street before we could even peel her off it. Fortunately, it's just road rash, no deep jagged cuts. She made a superb and graceful landing onto her elbows (she was shielding her head, smart girl) and knees.

The real worry is her knee. She broke the left one not too long ago and now although the right one is not broken, there's a ton of soft tissue damage which is worse we're getting it MRI'ed here in Bali. It's extremely painful and just the wrong shape.

I think I'm traumatized and sore (obviously not as much as her) too. I'm used to hitting the pavement but watching it happen to my sister made me puke my heart.

My trip back to the states has begun. Left Jalalabad on the 11th, hopefully Bagram on the 14/15th, then Romania between the 19-21st. Looking forward to a change of scenery for runs and bike rides and actually getting some swimming in.

Yanti, dear Yanti...  I'm shocked at your sister's horrifying accident.  Praying for you and your sister, hoping she heals well and her knee injury isn't as bad as feared.  You've got quite a schedule there, which looks very fun!  Praying for your healing and health, too.  Take care.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
