For 25 yds I'm at 14 strokes. I've only tried this for a few cool down laps. I'm sure I'll improve
BUT.....

Feels like I'm going to sink to the bottom and I wait until I'm about stopped before I give another stroke.

Tips, secrets, and what's the point?

How long does it take you to swim the 25 and how does that compare to 25 at your normal stroke rate (and what is your normal stroke rate)?

Only did this once before, kind of on a whim while doing cool down 25's.
Saw this drill posted once somewhere.
Just wondering what the point of the drill is.
Is it to stop thrashing? Enhance the glide? Promote relaxation?

Was supposed to get to the pool today, but work and life said NOPE.
I'm getting to the pool tomorrow and I'll get some answers.

The objective is to find that sweet spot where you are fast and efficient.

well swim golf specifically is adding together SPL and Time in seconds and trying to get a low score, indicating that you are swiming faster and taking fewer strokes. At some SPL below your sweet spot, you'll slow down...and at some SPL above it, you'll thrash like you said.

Don't confuse taking the fewest strokes, which is a drill with lots of different benefits you might work on, with Swim Golf.

The "right" number of strokes will vary mostly with your height. Your actual number of strokes will vary with your skill.

If you are already down to 14 strokes, time yourself doing 14. then see if you can deliberately swim 15 ... time it. Swim 16...time it, etc.

Then look and see if there are any patterns. What was your fastest and how did it feel? Were there other combos that felt good but may not have been your fastest? Those are nice objectives too.

have fun.

Do a ramp test. Change it to 25y unless you have access to a long course pool. http://www.swimsmooth.com/ramptest.html

How slow are you with 14 strokes? Unless you are a competitive swimmer over 6ft tall, you are overgliding with no kick to back that low stroke count, plus you are oxygen deprived too.

Coach sometimes has us do sets where we try to decrease our stroke count by 1 for each 25 repeat.  The purpose of this drill is to get the swimmer to extend the pull phase past his hip rather than cut it off short.  The "penalty" for not getting to the other end in 1 less stroke is you have to kick the remainder.   The drill knocks out 2 birds with one stone...finishing the stroke and utilizing the kick.

With stroke improvements I find that when I try and swim long I have lost any speed gains that I had because my stroke count just creeps up and up. I also feel like I'm running out of air.

This month, drills make up about 15% of each workout, and we’re continuing intervals. The focus will be on speeding up while maintaining good stroke technique, lots of stroke counting this time.

Improving speed in swimming is more than just doing a few sprints at the beginning and end of your workouts. It takes a little more thinking, but I promise there is no high level math involved!

Swimming and golf can both present you with a meditative-like form of exercise that I have found to be both fulfilling and fun!
