Only "OTC medication" I have ever taken during a race was Tums.

I also do not know many people that pop aspirin during a race.

Even though vitamin D is classified as a type of steroid, it's not a steroid in the sense that people associate with PED's.  It will only help a person if they're insufficient or deficient for it.  Also, taking too much can result in toxicity.

Definitely not trolling but thank you for the thought. You see the documentary about doping in sports? Plenty of athletes have taken D3 and other "steroids". This stuff is easy to find and I've found it to help a lot. I don't place near the top of my age group so there is no risk of getting caught. When I decide to make the final push for Hawaii, I'll stop what I'm taking since I do not have a biological passport on file.

It's amazing how 40-80 dollars a bottle can change your training and racing.

D3 (vitamin D) isn't a banned substance, and if you're paying that much for it, you're getting ripped off.

ETA:  And, as I said above, it will only improve performance if you're insufficient or deficient to begin with.

This is solid advice. My plus one experience is with decongestants not pain reliever but I hardly ever take medicines and shouldn't have taken them and raced. Bad bad day.

Same here. I had a cold, so I took an OTC decongestant. Then I had a coughing fit in the middle of the lake with very choppy water. My the time I flagged down a kayak so I could keep my head out of the waves and clear my lungs, I almost missed the swim cutoff. The rest of the race didn't get any better. I should have just stayed home.

That also crossed my mind, but I've seen vitamin D3 result in drastic improvements in energy levels in people who were deficient, and a quick Google search produced no other supplements called D3.  I'm curious whether he's thinking of something else, and has the name wrong, or if he didn't realize what it was that he's buying and how it works.

Or if he didn't understand that Vitamin D3 is available free of charge if you stand in the sun.

You cannot get 30,000 units from the sun unless you take cancer in trade.

So you're willing to take a substance that you think is outside the rules (as posted above, if it's really D3 it's not), thinking that it is "steroids" and it's all okay because you're not at the top of your AG.

Either trolling or you need to do some research (start with Google scholar and "vitamin D and athletic performance," "confirmation bias," and "placebo effect."

Might you be able to post a link to the D3 product you are taking ? That would at least lessen the guesswork here...

LB, last time I knew, you were on the admin side of police work which means your bullchit detector may be a bit rusty.

Yeah, the job changes, but bullchit doesn't.

I looked up every variation I could find listed as D3 and none showed up on the banned substance list. So if it's not banned, and he sees improvement (could be placebo, maybe he is deficient, whatever) then I don't see an issue.

That being said, the willingness to cheat though...that I just don't get. He is saying that he believes it is cheating (even if it doesn't appear to be) and knowingly does it anyway. What's the point in that? That's just lame. If you're going to cheat your way there, just take a flight to Kona, hang around and get your picture taken at the Ironman village and tell everyone you made it. I'm sure you could find a place on the internet to buy a finishers medal. Same result. If you cheat to get there, then you didn't get there. Period.

Yeah - they doubled down - so now I'm left at this point:
