Your old marathon time would still make the B standard today, so you kind of fit in?

Errr...I would only have been Olympic material if I was from a really small country, or one where running was very unpopular. Actually used to train with a woman who had represented Guam at the Olympics. (I guess they field a team?) and I was faster than her. I also had a really awkward situation when I was (I think) 21 or 22 and won a 25 km race that I discovered after the fact was Taiwan's Olympic marathon trials. They were really low on run talent--the top Taiwanese finisher was a teenager who was too young to run in the Olympics. I think they ended up giving the spot to a woman in her 40's. Some official was trying to persuade me to change my citizenship! I think there are time constraints on that, and anyway not worth it!

I did once run the marathon at World University Games (in 1989), and was the alternate the year before. The latter really sucks--you don't get to go; you're basically told, "Be ready to run a marathon at the drop of a hat in August." Not what collegiate cross-country runners normally do all summer. The following year I was selected--not sure why. I guess it isn't as hard to get that slot as the other T and F events as not that many college students run the marathon. University Games was extremely cool, like a mini-Olympics, and a big motivation for me wanting to go to Worlds in tri. Just neat to meet so many people from around the world with the same passions. I managed to trade for a USSR national team uniform--two years before it ceased to exist,

It's all like a lifetime ago. I think sometime between 21 and 41, someone took my body when I was asleep and exchanged it for the current, much less functional model. Every once in a while I feel speedy again, and then I look down and realize I'm running 2 minutes a mile slower than I think I am!

hi Anne. Once you post here you're a Manstee. And like the Rogers & Hamerstein song "when you're a Jet you're a jet all the way..." You post here once you're a Manatee for life. ??????

Welcome Anne, I had heard you might be joining us. I hope you will let us know a little bit about yourself, and this sounds like a good time as any to reiterate the standard Manatee kickoff:

WELCOME to the Manatees. Some iteration of this group has been going on for over 10 seasons and I've lost track of what season we are in! We are all mentors and mentees, which sounds like manatees--hence our name.

All experience levels and goals welcome. We have not-yet-triathletes, multiple-iron finishers, runners, bikers and swimming specialists. We are beginners, folks at the highest levels of endurance sport, and everyone in between. Our training philosophies, gear, locations, and methods are similarly varied.

We are very committed to health and to each other. We are an extremely supportive and very active group, as Janyne likes to say, inactive Manatees make us sad. Please check in (even to admit you're procrastinating or overwhelmed) and be passionate. Keeping up your training log here on BT and opening it to other group members is mandatory. This helps us all connect through messages such as Inspires and PM's, which some of us do on a regular basis. (If you don't know how, we'll help you). We have members that have been here a while and really know how this site works. We are ready and willing to help guide you through the wealth of resources found on BT. We also use a variety of other tools, such as Strava and other Social Media sites to encourage and support one another. We believe the journey is the reward, and look forward to having you as a fellow traveler and a friend.

AS ALWAYS, ALL FORMER MANATEES ARE WELCOME AT ANY TIME.

TO JOIN, PLEASE REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE (include or later add bio ASAP).

Bio: whatever you want from format below and/or whatever you want us to know.

NAME: What you're actually called.
STORY: Who you are, why you want to do endurance/multisport, any athletic background/none
FAMILY STATUS: Family situation (single/partnered/family/pets)
CURRENT TRAINING: If/how you have been training so far
THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: If any have been chosen or are on the possibilities list.
GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: What do you hope to get out of this?
WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: Why do you want to join this group?

GO RACING MANATEES!!!

Every week in my life is crazy but especially so with famous kitty Smoky defying death yet again. He was actually supposed to come home from hospital today (weeks ahead of schedule, more likely to prevent staff from murdering him than anything) but mounted an escape attempt resulting in popped stitches and a rather bitten-up staff in trying to recapture him. There was duct tape on TOP of the lock in the latch on his cage today!

Really, I canNOT imagine where he gets such ideas ... from his father, surely. :P

AND CONGRATULATIONS TO MR VIVALDI on the job

Aww, thanks for the endorsement!
I actually had a dream about Smoky last night, don't remember details but something about he was running around the house with my 3 cats and hiding in a bathroom so that he wouldn't have to go back to the vets. Crazy stuff...

Good morning Manatees!
Thank you Chris, for opening up the group to me. And thanks to Judi, Robin and Yanti for the endorsement. I recently started using Strava and somehow found the Manatee Strava group --- I think someone had a link to it from their BT profile page . Anyway, I have been around BT since 2008. Seems like BT isn't nearly as active as it used to be, so it's great to find a group like the Manatees where there is a lot of discussion and forum activity.

NAME: Anne Baker
STORY: I"m a 54 year old graphic artist, living in Central Illinois. Adult Onset Athlete. Has Lasik surgery in 2008 and realized that swimming was now an option (contact lenses never worked well with water). Learned to get across the pool at the local Y. Backstroked and dogpaddled my first open water swim at a sprint tri that summer. Yikes! Things have improved somewhat. I'm not competitive but I enjoy training for events. I've done some sprints, a handful of Olympic races and completed IMFL last November. Did a gravel grinder race on my mountain bike in May and fell in love with that type of riding.
Have been dealing with plantar f and an achilles tear this year, so probably no racing until that's resolved.
FAMILY STATUS: Long term relationship with Steve, one grown daughter, 3 crazy cats and some tropical fish.
CURRENT TRAINING: I have a Training Peaks coach who keeps me honest. Typically 3-4 bikes per week, 1-2 swims (I don't always get these in), and a couple of runs. Yoga and strength work 2-3x a week. I'm trying to get back to running but it's been a very slow process with a lot of experimentation. Yoga seems to help the foot, along with some orthotics. I'm currently up to a couple of run/walk sessions per week.
THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Bike only events this year --- Cedar Cross Gravel Grinder in May, El Tour De Tucson in November
GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Being injured has really forced me to re-evaluate my reasons for identifying as a triathlete. I'll have to think about this one.
WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: Why do you want to join this group? There are good people in the Manatees! I've met some great people through BT, and some, like Robin, I have met in real life.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone, and thank you Chris for adding me to the Strava group. What is everyone doing for the holiday weekend? I love that Independence Day fell on a Monday this year so that we have an extended weekend.

I'm hoping the rain holds off.  We're hosting a small pool party.

House guests through tomorrow. A ton of people coming over to watch the town fireworks.(They blast off about 400- 500 yds from our house. Going down to the dock to watch them is like being in a colorful war zone). Also trying to gather stuff to go camping for a week and make sure that my Mom has her rides into town and is covered while we are away.

I've got nothing special going on - most of my peeps are out of town and, for various reasons, had to stay in town. So, just getting in running and biking and depending on the pool, swimming. Plus housework. One of those things I really don't want to do

Typical holiday weekend at my house talking about how to pee on the bike and bloody nipples on the marathon with my sister in law and her partner. Her partner is new to the family, but glad she is comfortable enough with us for this conversation. haha (there are youtube how to videos on the subject.

Got in the pool for the first meaningful swim in I can't remember when.  Figure if I am to do the aqua bike next weekend I should try and see how bad my swim endurance is.  If the river conditions are favorable, I will survive nicely.  If it's rough...well, they may fish my butt out of the river.

If the swim gets canceled because of bad conditions (we are expecting thunder storms all week and the local tri club has canceled more open water practices than it has had this season)  I will survive a run of maybe 2 miles and a bike ride....then just turn in my chip at T2.

Maybe I should post a for sale sign on my tri bike when I set up T1 so I can unload it....

Yes, happy 4th of July to all our American manatees! May you all have a wonderful and fun holiday!

I am working today (our holiday was Friday) - we had a very low-key weekend which was nice. I managed to get some training in which was awesome. And i even did a strength workout which has been sorely missing from my regimen but i am sore! I even cut it short knowing not to do too much! hahahaha! The funniest though is my sleep data from my garmin vivoactive. Most nights it shows I get about 3-3.5 hours of deep sleep but the last two nights i've been sore it shows pretty much all deeps sleep LOL! I guess I am  too sore to move in my sleep! :P

Anyway, today is the first day of my telework where i can work from home Mondays and Wednesdays (yay) and it seems quite fortuitious that the high school on the next block with a pool now has some summer lane swim hours. So guess where I am going on my lunch hour! Cause it doesn't matter how i look when i come home!

Also looking forward to the week - my new summer swim session starts with the tri club. And we're off to Musselman trialthlon weekend in New York State on Friday.

I just got back from a vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and am feeling the strains of the resort food (to put it lightly). My last couple of runs, my stomach has been in knots, but it's getting a lot better. On a positive note, Mexico was a ton of fun. I went on zip lines, went parasailing, and visited downtown Puerto Vallarta. The beaches were great, although a bit brown, and the hotel had all I would ever need (except maybe a bike path).

Long weekend highlights included running a 1/2 on the trails and doing a 100km ride, half through rolling hills then back home all on the rail trail. It made for a slow ride but a great workout. Back at work today. Also picked up a cheap pair of wheels today so I dont have to continually swap tires back and forth.

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
