Veteran 487 McFarland, WI | Subject: RE: Crowded gyms Thank god I only use my gym for swimming! My rants: 1-Members walking on the pool deck with their street shoes on leaving mud, grass, etc. around the pool. 2-People that do not wear swim caps! My biggest complaint-women with long hair who leave nice long strands of hair in the pool that end up stuck on my fingers during my swim. I am in the minority, I estimate 10% of the swimmers wear caps. 3-People who don't shower before swimming (a health department regulation)--they enter the pool area bone dry and jump right in. 4-The water aerobicisers who wear old running shoes in the pool, leaving behind bits of rubber, dirt, etc. on the bottom of the pool. 5-Too much chlorine. I realize some must be used but do we really need to overdo it? 6-General lack of pool maintenance and cleanliness at times. Get ready--the overflow track around the pool and hot tub now have some form of leeches living in them. A friend of mine saw them around the hot tub area (they came up out of the tracks because some type of pesticide was pumped down into the tracks). He brought it to the attention of the maintenance staff and they told him, "don't say anything, we trying to take care of it and we don't want the health department to close us down." Bottom line--I will be swimming at the club on the west side of town until I hear this has cleared up! 7-Does anyone pick up after themselves? I see used tissues, candy wrappers, empty water bottles, etc. on the floor in the locker room. Newspapers litter the pool deck and the dry sauna benches. Raves--see, not everything is bad: 1-Open 24 hours, swimming on Saturday and Sunday nights for as long as I want with no one asking to share a lane, no kids, etc. 2-Great front desk people who take your complaints seriously. 3-The red phone--you pick it up and record your complaint/suggestion and 99% of the time it is immediately acted upon. 4-The pool guy (we call him chemical Ali) who patiently waits until we are finished swimming to dump the huge bucket of chlorine into the pool on Sunday nights. |

Master 1324 Rochester, NY | Subject: RE: Crowded gyms I also suffer many of the rants that people have posted. I'll add a couple more. 1) The guys in the locker room that bend over to get something out of their bags with no shorts on. Yes, they moon you or whoever. I'm sure if I were gay, I'd like that. But come on, put on some shorts or a towel before bending over. 2) People (mostly women) who wear perfume/cologne into the pool. Water re-activates the scent. I've had to leave the pool because the aroma was so strong. |

I see used tissues, candy wrappers, empty water bottles, etc. on the floor in the locker room. Newspapers litter the pool deck and the dry sauna benches. Wow. Sounds like a really scary gym. I'm not wild about 24 Hour Fitness, but I have to say that the gym near my office is nearly spotless. There's always at least one cleaning person in the locker room, cleaning, and sometimes two. There are three or four cleaning staff people that I see so often, I know them by sight. And they're always sweeping, mopping, cleaning, picking up discarded newspapers, replacing mats, etc. At the gym near my home, things are quite so pristine, but I rarely see trash sitting around. My only cleanliness complaint at that facility is the floor of the locker room. The type of tile they used isn't smooth, so dirt and lint and stuff tends to collect and it just doesn't 'feel' as clean. |

Veteran 120 Long Island, NY | Subject: RE: Crowded gyms ginac007 - 2006-11-16 10:09 PM The crowded gym doesn't bother me nearly as much as a crowded locker room. And I can't understand how everyone can just casually walk around in all their glory without a hint of modesty. Today at my gym I was showering after my swim and there's are all these ungroomed women just standing around butt-A@$ naked chit chatting away. How about a towel people! That was one of the biggest reasons I left my gym!! I would try and hide out in a remote part of the locker room, but somehow I would always get cornered by an old naked lady. Being a girl who wanted to use the free weight room posed a lot of problems. Finding two 15 lb dumbells, finding a bench, forget about squats, is screaming on the last rep really necessary...I would only dare to enter this with my mp3 player on (the universal gym symbol for Do Not Even Try To Talk To Me) Life is much better with my own free weights, smith machine, and treadmill in my basement |

Veteran 130 East Lansing, MI | Subject: RE: Crowded gyms I absolutely love my gym because it's on campus, so almost everyone there is my age except for faculty. Yeah it's 80 cents for a half hour of parking, but that's why I go after 6pm to park free. Cheap rates, free classes, free pool. Gotta love it. I think the one problem I have is when people don't wipe the equipment off with the blatantly obvious sheets that are RIGHT next to the equipment. And of course during new year's when it just gets insane. My gym is two floors, and the top one (treadmills, "girl weights", ellipitcals looks onto the bottom one (weight machines). The one thing I am guilty of is definitely getting an ellipitcal near the edge so I can look over and watch the guys lifting weights, haha. My favorite is when a guy walks in trying to be all badass, with the weight gloves too, and just walks around, not lifting anything.. |

Guy was lifting weight while in his business casual attire. Shirt, pants, shoes everything. I would hate to work for his company. I will admit I rarely sweet when I lift but still. Its not gross but still. |

Champion 6993 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: Crowded gyms Adam P - 2006-11-20 8:59 AM Lucky you, chirunner...I made the error of wearing a light grey t-shirt to lift in this morning and ended up looking like I'd taken a dip in the pool! (Don't worry though, all, I did wipe each machine after use!) Maybe its because I rarely grut at the gym. I saw a video from abcnews where the gym grunter was on it and they said doctors are saying that its not only should be acceptible but a much needed part of weight lifting. Then again I am not looking to go too heavy. Weight lifting for me is something to tired my muscles but not makes them only a little sore and not so sore I can not move them. I do not want them so sore I can not more them well because it does throw off my swim practice. I made this mistake once and never again. |

I thought it was just my imagination until I asked the swimmer next to me who also stopped for the same reason. #2 With 7 treadmills available and I'm at one end.. why should we pick the only one next to me and wearing, guess.. cologne. #3 People who take 'If you can hold a conversation while working out, you are at the right heart rate level' a bit too seriously. Yuppers. those are mine.. |

Expert 832 Framingham, MA | Subject: RE: Gym rant This is a little off the original topic of crowded gyms, but since this thread has become a "gym rant" thread here's my addition: Today while I was taking a shower, some a$$hole broke into my locker (which was locked) and stole cash out of my wallet as well as one of my credit cards! Thankfully, by the time I called the bank, the thief had only charged about $30 to the card, which the bank said they would refund. How's that for holiday spirit? |

Champion 10471 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Crowded gyms crozetiga - 2006-11-17 2:55 PM 3. the fact the gym feels it is necessary to play music and when playing said music play it far too loudly! why not have a non-music session? That reminded me. In my spin class, we are in this little room. They have speakers mounted in the front of the room that would be big enough for an amphitheatre. They insist on cranking up the music so loud that i can here a thing. My ears are ringing by the end of the 45-50 minute class. I really thing that I am going to say something about it next week. I am a musician and I need my ears!!!!!!! Josh SAY THAT ONE AGAIN! I hate this. Absolutely hate it. And I really hate it, because the music sucks. I typically put on my iPod and turn it up to *try* to drown out the horrible music the spin class instructor is playing. I also hate the spin class instructor yelling every 2 seconds, VERY LOUDLY, "COME ON". UGH. Finally... I find it equally annoying when participants in the spin class, insist on talking THROUGH the spin class. Now, in order to talk, they have to YELL over the music and the spin instructor yelling... REALLY FREAKING ANNOYING. I gave those 2 many dirty looks that night. |

In this one gym I go to... it's amazing how bad it stinks where the sinks and toliets are. Makes me gag. I wish I had air fresher to spray. |

I'm sure the locker room so-called-attendant was too busy on his cell phone to overhear someone jimmying a locker door. A woman at my Master's swim had her car keys stolen (she had locked her purse in the trunk). They cleaned out her car completely - even took her jacket. I'm just surprised they didn't take the vehicle. My keys work out with me now. |

Actually I just double-checked with the bank, and it looks like it's around $175 total. I'll know for sure tomorrow once the transactions have posted. What gets me is that I often find lockers with no locks on them, so why break into mine? I also realized that I've been hanging my jacket up in the entry to the locker room (no room in the locker) - but not anymore! I'll take up as many lockers as I need to secure everything! |
