Thanks for all the well wishes! It should be fun. Both my brother and wife are going to be doing it as well as some other BT'ers who I hope to get to meet.

It's nice to hear that everyone is getting over being sick and starting in on some training.

Donato, it's funny that you mentioned all of those sales, I was on the Performance website yesterday and purhcased a new riding jacket, some running tights and some Cytomax (which I've never had). A few goodies is always so motivating!

Yeah, it's fun to buy new stuff. Good motivator to train. I use Cytomax when cycling quite, but I have to admit my sports beverage of choice is Clif Recovery French Vanilla.

Thanks for the sales update Donato!  BTW, on the California threads they have some of the other BT'ers that will be at the race this weekend.  It would be fun to meet.  It would be my first BT meeting!

Jason: good luck on your next interview phase, I believe it's coming up this Monday?  Sending good thoughts.

Richard: I got the Vision Tech CarbonPro aeros for Christmas and I just love them.  My hubby went with these because they had a wide size selection which was important because I'm so small and you need a good fit.  Also, I didn't know this till my hubby researched this, but for clip on aero's, you need to get one that is compatible to your brand bikes existing bars ( mostly sizeing issue) so make sure when you get a used one that you already know it is compatible.

Hey, everyone, I "ran" for another 5 minutes today!    I took all the surgical tape off and now am just coming to terms with the very long scars that I hope will fade...but also I registered today for the LATri in September, which was supposed to be my A race last year.  Prices go up tomorrow, and I'm cheap so that was a motivator, but I'm also sure I can finish it (even if I end up walking, which I did last year in the sprint).  Coach J (at the clinic the other day) told me that an injury is actually a great way to force you to do months of LSD/base training, so I will take my time getting back to fitness level by September.

Hey everybody!  I'm back too, back from the dead it feels like.  Richard and Donato, those race reports were great, they really make me look forward to actually racing one day.  Gail it's really impressive to watch your blogs.  It seems like I'm constantly being tripped up in my training by small hurdles but you're training all the time and your legs haven't even healed from surgery yet!  Very motivating.  Jeff, Gina & Donato:  good luck and have fun this weekend!!

I have different motivations than y'all --  first is that if I don't get out there and use my lower leg muscles, the incisions in the fascia will heal back the way they were (too tight) and then I'll have these lovely scars for no reason, and that would really really suck.  So while you guys are really training, I am mostly rehabbing right now, which means getting out there every day.  When I am training, I make sure to have regular rest/recovery days and focused, periodized weeks, but now I don't need to worry about any of that technical stuff.  Plus walking is not that tiring!

Second is that I am single and I work only part-time (and at home), so I have to do something other than lie around and eat and watch television! Joining the tri club was a way to meet more people, and now even walking around my neighborhood daily has led to a lot of neighborly conversation.  I am surprised how many of my neighbors are home during the day!  At 3 pm on a weekday they are washing their cars, using their table saws, chatting at our little market, and one lady sits in a rocker in her driveway and knits, with her cat at her feet...

But most of all I really love to swim and to ride my bicycle -- I may love running too once I am actually able to do it.  I am definitely a "lifestyle" triathlete rather than a race-oriented one.  Especially here where the weather is so nice -- I'm originally from snow country, so I hate to "waste" sunny days, even when they come all the time.

Richard and Gina,

You both expressed interest in recipes. Richard, you said it needs to be simple. Gina, from reading your log you sound very busy so I will post one of my favorite quick meals that is low in fat and high in protein and can be made in less than 10 minutes.

Ingredients:
1 jar of Pasta Sauce. I get Newman’s Own sauce. It’s good and low in fat.

1 cup of Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) or Textured Soy Protein (TSP). This you can find in the bulk section of your grocery store. It has a yellowish/beige color. It actually looks and feels like bred crumbs. This is a super food. 50-70% protein!

Optional: Grated or sliced cheese

How to make it:
Simply pour the sauce into a pot. Then add the TVP. Mix it well and heat it up. It does not have to “boil”. Done! Remember that you are simply dealing with vegetables. All you need to do is to heat it up, don’t boil it. It should take no more than 5 minutes to heat it up. I serve it in a bowl and like to put a slice of Muenster cheese on top. I eat this 1-2 per week. It’s very filling.

When the TVP is mixed into the sauce it takes on the flavor of the sauce and it does not taste like soy, I promise. The texture is chewy and somewhat resembles ground beef.

Nice race reports everyone! You guys did great. It makes it more inspiring to workout after reading what you have accomplished.

Here is another super quick meal that is nutritious and filling. Get a can of “creamy” soup and add Baked Tofu (http://www.quonghop.com/products/baked.htm). Baked tofu does not taste like regular tofu that I know is not that appealing to most people. Baked tofu is super firm and is not slimy like the regular stuff. Chop the tofu into 0.25-0.5” squares and add it to the soup. A complete meal in less than 10 minutes. Each serving of baked Tofu has 25g of protein, 3.5g of fat and 10g of carbs whereof 0 is from sugar.

Hey thanks for posting those recipes. When I go to the store this weekend I will look for textured protein. In your store what other common items or section are they in??

I have never tried tofu because I have listened to everyone complain about how nasty it is (Here in Oklahoma beef is supreme) but if I can find the baked tofu I will give that a shot as well. Those are some protein bomb-shells.

The Textured Vegetable Protein I have only seen in the bulk foods section. I assume there is an area in your grocery store where you can buy flour, pasta, beans etc in bulk? If they have TVP, you will find it in that section.

Baked tofu like all other kinds of tofu needs to be refrigerated. In some stores you can find it in the fruit and veggies section. Other stores have an “organic/health” section and they might keep it there.

If you can’t find these items in you local grocery store you will most likely find them in an Asian food store. I guess that these items might not be in every grocery store in Oklahoma. I travel down to El Paso, TX fairly often for work and it’s very difficult for me to find anything to eat besides a boring salad. I hope Stillwater is a bit more progressive than El Paso!

So have you guys tried the new Route Tracker?  I just mapped one of my around-the-block walks (1.75 miles).  I am going to try to attach the elevation graph here. 

According to the program, some of the grades are over 30%; one even says 40%.  Can that be right?  I am bicycling up a 40% grade every ride, when I am healthy?   No way...

I just tried the route tracker. I've used this type of tool on other sites that use the google map. It's obviously not perfectly accurate. Even on a mileage basis, it mapped the route I do around my neighborhood at 5.5 miles whearas I have run this many dozens of times with my Garmin which comes in consistently at 6.0-6.1 miles. It's impossible for google to have a big enough database to accurately measure all of that and given that Sierra Madre is so hilly and not likely thoroughly mapped out by google, I'm not suprised that it gave some funky readings. Still, you do certainly have some good sized hills over there since you're sort of at the foothills of Mt. Wilson.

For fun, I plotted the block that is just west of my house going uphill. It is pretty scary steep (scary enough in a car, but seriously scary on a bike). it measured in at a 79% grade! Hill repeats anyone?

LOL -- so practical!  Aren't you supposed to say, "Hey, what a stud you are, running and cycling up those big hills on your 11-23"?

I've also thought the mileage was off on those trackers, esp. if you run along the curb, but I always think it's a good thing -- means I run faster than I thought!

So I went to the pool today and thought I would see if I could swim the 750 meter distance of my sprint without resting.  I started with a 50 meter warmup then rested for 30 seconds and I went for it.  17:40 later I had completed 15 laps down and back of the 25 meter pool at my gym.  I guess I might have to rethink my swim goals!  I want to thank everybody in this group because that made my day and I don't think it would have happened without all of your support, so THANKS!
