What are the odds of getting in?

I was thinking of putting in my application. What the hell. Never know when you will get in. I am not close to IM shape, but I guess I would have 7 months or so to prepare.

Anyone else giving it a shot?

Part of would like to wait another year. But you never know what could happen (injury, etc.)...so why not give it a shot.

I know I am not Kona qualifier material. But after watching the TV show, it seems there are a slew of qualifiers/others.

There are 200 slots for the lottery, 150 US and 50 International. Of the 150 us, 100 are from the Passport Club (which costs and extra $50 to join) and the remaining 50 are everyone else plus all the Passport members not chosen. Figure your odds at 50 out of 3000-4000 if you aren't a Passport Member. It's getting harder and harder to get in every year because more and more people are putting in for it. I say what the hell, go for it!

Geez, this might a lottery I might regret winning. Don't you have to swim, bike and run a pretty far distance all in the same day? (gulp)

egatz...that is a longshot. Passport club rakes in $200k. Beautiful.

Oh well...that is what I deserve for not being a fast triathlete. Other events in Hawaii to do as well.

A neighbor of mine entered a few years ago, he was told it takes about 6 attempts to potentially get a slot...he scored a lottery slot on his first entry! So, while the odds are more difficult, just be prepared...

He was taken by surprise getting an entry to KONA but trained & went on to do the race.

True, but @ 2006 Eagleman 70.3 the 75+ division had 1 slot available out of 3 racers, and the 35 - 39 division had 2 slots available out of 237 racers.

I like the 75+ odds better, 33.3% vs. .8%.

AG 70 - 74 was even better, 1 slot available for 2 racers.

Yep, from ironman.com :

Athletes who are SELECTED through the Ironman Lottery must have completed an event that is 70.3 (1.2 Mile, 56 Mile + 13.1 Mile) distance or greater within one year of the 2007 Ford Ironman World Championship

Failure to comply will result in forfeiture of the lottery slot.

Yep. I am doing the CA 70.3 March 31 of this year so I meet (I better!!!) that requirement. Might even do another HIM.

I didn't realize the odds were that long, but still might be worth it.

I am far away from being in IM condition. I need a lot of advanced notice before I start going crazy on my workouts. Training for a HIM seems difficult enough.

its only 49 - 3000 - 4000 for none passport members since I know I am going to win one.

My idea is train like your going to get in and when you do your set and if not your that much better for another race or next year.

I thought it was any HIM or greater distance. That is what it sounded like on active.

I thiought about signing up for one jsut in case also. It would suck if there are mean that way and say you can not do it. What BS would it be with you did an Iron distance race and they say sorry but its not our brand so you can not validate in with it. That is just sick honestly. I can not stand such attitudes and frankly if it goes that way I do not know if I would want to do one of there races anymore.

I think that since USAT and the WTC are friends again , that any USAT-certified half or greater distance tri validates your slot.

I'm paying for the lottery this year, and if I get in I'll have already validated my slot by finishing IMFL last year.

That's what it said last year, and when I emailed and asked for clarification, I was told that it had to be an official IM race ( 70.3 or IM ).

Where did you get the 3000-4000? Is it published anywhere? Anybody knows how many international entrants there are?

I read something on the website either last year or year before about there being a record (at the time) amount of entries into the lottery. The number they published was 3300. It only stands to reason as triathlon has become more popular that that number would grow.

I have no idea how many international entries were submitted.
