Since there are at least 7 BT members doing this race, I thought, why not start a thread? I know Cobannero has done this race last year, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.  This will be my first ever tri..what about everyone else?

Here's a few questions I have for Cobannero (& others who have completed race):

The pool has 8 lanes, is everybody in 1 lane going same direction, or is it shared lanes?

How far from pool is T1? Is it slippery to run, anybody use shoes coming out of pool?

Did you wear tri top for swim?

Since bike is 3 loops & run is 2 loops, I'm assuming it is spectator friendly?

Are there AG categories, or just overall results?

What will you do differently this year compared to last?

I'm sure I'll have more questions, but this is a good start.

Thanks.

You will share a lane at times. We all start (one line), somewhere in the middle (directly under their tallest jumping platform-the pool is about 30' deep) and zig-zag (or snake), your way toward the end of the pool - basically swim to the end, swtich to the other lane (sometimes going under the rope) and swim back (working your way to the other end repeating the process. (KEEP IN MIND TO STAY ON THE CORRECT LANE, THERE WAS A COLLISION TWO YEARS AGO - more like a bump but still the potential is there).
You will come to the end, where you will touch the wall (carefully watched by an official), come out of the pool using the ladder. This is where the first timing mat is.

Here is a picture of the facility http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/Parks/WhereToGo/recreation/N...

How far from pool is T1?
About 30 feet. The pool is indoors and they stress, you walk, not run. I've seen people slip on the timing mat, right off the pool (I did, almost fell). You exit the building and you walk on the grass, the morning dew can ruin your day too

Map of the course - pretty much accurate but not to scale as you can expect.
http://www.longislandtri.com/maps/MmM.cfm

Is it slippery to run, anybody use shoes coming out of pool?
Haven't seen anyone use them but you can leave them by the door, exiting the building

Did you wear tri top for swim?
From the beginning I prefer using a tri (one piece), to avoid dealing with changes, etc. I've seen people wear everything but fringes. :)

Since bike is 3 loops & run is 2 loops, I'm assuming it is spectator friendly?
There transition sits in the open (no security but safe), right next to the huge building that provides a higher elevation for speactators. However, you pretty much disappear on the bike (closed to traffic) BUT they have a full view of your slogging around about 90% of the run (just when you can bonk out of course). :)

Are there AG categories, or just overall results?
Yes to AG categories.

What will you do differently this year compared to last?
Get there early and get one of the coveted ends on the rack. Don't take it personally if someone decides to cram right next to you on the outside of the rack, I've seen this happen every year. HAVE FUN AND DON'T MIND THE INSIGNIFICANT STUFF

Racing - My goals for every race is to beat last year's time.
Event - Have as much fun or more as the previous

OTHER STUFF
1-Some place on their site they stress some ettiquete (sp). If needing to pass the swimmer ahead of you, tap their feet (or tickle), just before reaching the wall and they should let you pass (you will hear about this just before the start). Be prepared for some genious not paying attention to this. I saw probably, 3 last year but were held back by the officials at the wall.

2-I've done this race the past 2 years and have not heard of any stuff getting stolen, despite the (seemingly), lack of security. I have not issues with leaving my stuff in transition and neither does anyone else, from the looks of things.

3-Lockers are directly under the bleachers and you can bring a lock and use their lockers. I've used them to lock my car keys, etc.-the AM hours belong to us, the athletes
Warm ups are allowed pre-race.

4-Make sure you strap your timing chip (around your ankle), snug but not too tight. I've seen some laying at the bottom of the pool 30' down. (someone was not happy that day, I'm sure)

I'll come back with more if I remember. This was my first tri and I still remember what anxiety you may feel if it's your first (you're probably shaking your leg, reading this). In the end you will want to do a sprint and it only gets wort from there. Next thing you know, a HIM is in the works.

I haven't done the race before (it will be my second ever), but I want to clear up the answer to the first question. If it's an 8 lane 50 meter pool, each lane should only be going in one direction (8 x 50 = 400). It makes the most sense that way, since it leaves room to pass.

As an aside, I am looking forward to swimming at an indoor, long course facility. My first race was in a shallow lake, which I was NOT pleased with. Pools rock, and I kick butt at long course

I really want to do this race, it sounds like a lot of fun and I'm sure it would be with all the local BT'ers that will be there. My only dilemma is that I'll be in Buffalo (my band is playing a reunion show) from Wednesday night until that weekend. I could drive home the day before, but I have a feeling I'll be drained from the previous days and the 8 hour drive. Decisions, decisions.

That's what I thought, but Cobannero did the race last year and he says only 4 lanes were being used and you go up & back in 1 line, cross under rope and repeat.  I'm sure he'll clarify.

JET BLUE Baby!!!  My parents 50th wedding anniversary party is the night before, and it's being done up like a full blown wedding reception.  I'm sure I will not be entering the race with proper nutrition or rest.  And you're only 23 Years Old! SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP!!! Especially if you have a chance for AG hardware... Convince you yet???

Each lane (a lane is created with two ropes), is wide enough for two swimmers to swim side by side. In the case of this race, each lane will have one side swimming out, the other side coming back, in the opposite direction. Once you return, you will go under the rope and enter the second lane and repeat until you snake your way to the side closest to the bleachers and exit the ladder (not in the picture). This is how the collision happend the first year I did this race - one of them simply forgot or drifted to the on-coming lane without crossing the ropes.

Personally, I think the entire pool should be used specifically to avoid this. Since I didn't hear of this happening again for 06, they may keep it that way.

Below, the solid line represents the rope, the dotten line just to represent the division as described above and of course the arrows showing the direction of the swimmers are going. Each way is 50m.

Do we make time for a BT group pic before, after or both to represent wear & tear - although some of you may already have that worn-in look before the start.

That's really annoying. The event website seemed to indicate that the whole pool would be in use.

Before or After, doesn't matter to me.  I almost always get to places way too early, so I'll probably be milling around early enough, just not sure if I'll have fan support with a camera.

Time to bump this thread!!  Wow..this Sunday is the day!!  My first triathlon.  Weather looks decent so far, perhaps a little cool to be going from pool to T1.  If it is about 40-45 degrees..what do you plan on wearing for the swim and will you put warm clothes on in T1?

I was thinking of swimming in tri- top to save time..but with temps in 40's not sure I want that top to be wet.  Thoughts?

It might be a game time decision. If its chilly I might throw on a loose under armour top after the swim. I saw 60's for Sat I hope its like that on Sunday.

Fortunately, for me, I'm a bit warm blooded so for 2005 - 53F, I was a tiny bit cold during T1 so I put on a T-shirt, but warmed up quickly on the bike. For 2006 it was 70F, nuff said.

This weekend coming looks to be about 50+ and sunny again so I'm crossing my fingers and will be ready for the same 2005 plan.

Hee hee No shirtless for me...at least not for a few months (still working on it).

The bike racks are "assigned" something like (1-20), (21-30), so if your number is 1 and you show up late, you will not get the end spot.
Big races - usually Olympics and high profile events like St. A's (which I'm going to ) do assign specific spots for each athlete so there will be no pushing for the "best spot" on the rack.

Like I posted before, don't be surprised if you get the end spot and some mo-mo decides he'll take the outside of the rack. I had someone do that to me (resting his bike up against mine).
I "moved" it for him. He looked but never said a word. I guess the look I gave him must've told him I was ready for a full contact tri....and probably knew he was wrong too.

WHEW!!!!  (wiping brow)..no shirtless for this Super Clyde either.  Especially since I just found out 2 hotties from my gym are doing the race, family might be there, and girls that work for me got a hold of my 2007 schedule so I don't know where/when they'll show up!! .

OK, Swim times. On my application I estimated my time for 400m will be 7 min...actually I think it will be closer to 7:45-8:00min because my pool is 50 feet and this pool is 50m!  But I might be capable of coming in low 7mins.  Should I email RD and tell him I am closer to 8min and risk having to pass people, or say nothing and just be courteous letting people pass me, should the need arise?

I'm thinking in the spirit of being an avid golfer where trust & honor rule, that I should email him.  btw, what times did you guys estimate?

Yeah, I'm apprehensive about the swim time, too. I said 6:10 or 6:15 or something. While I CAN do that time, I'm not sure if it's going to happen this particular weekend. Should I look forward to getting crushed?

Yeah, I would e-mail him but make sure you let him know who you are, come race day. He'll make the adjustment on the spot. As ra He's a very cool guy.
I always give myself a bit of room (i.e.), if I can do the 400 in say 8:30, I tell them 8:45.
