cheryl, sounds like your metabolism is blazing in the morning....  all I have is a bowl of high-protein high-fiber cereal with 1% milk and it holds me for about 2 hours.  At which point, I have my mid-morning snack of banana with PB.  If I don't have the snack, I am RAVENOUS by lunch....

OK, I like this month's challenge.  AND I can see myself heading to one of those vitamin stores to try a green drink.  Although, I gotta warn you, I have a really sensitive stomach...  we'll see!

I am heading out now, to go play a volleyball doubleheader.  I SHOULD be going to bed, since my cold is 'winning' right now, but I can't let my team down.  'Go Funbags'  (Yes, that's our team name)

Oh, one more thing - Lisa, my race is the third weekend in June - I start my 20-wk program on Monday.  That's good info about the intensity level- you dont get that with the standard training plans on BT.  Thanks!!

Well, well, everybody is quite today. I suppose some of you are still in mourning over the Patritos loss. :-)

(Sorry, just had to tease, even if I do hate football!)

LOL I am not mourning.. more like nursing a hangover.  I can't believe the Giants won!!  AND now I am heading to Boston for that interview.  Hmm, do I avoid the topic when chatting with my interviewers, or rub it in their face??  :>

Hey All:

Sorry I haven't been around very much.

On the breakfast question: I have found that I need more protein than carbs in the morning, so I always have a protein shake in addition to yogurt and fruit.

On the recovery drink question: I use Hammer Nutrition products (Heed, Recoverite, and Gel). I find that if I just drink water during/after a workout that I am really fatigued by the end of the workout. I usually use heed plus whey protein during a workout and Recoverite (which has both carbs and protein in it) after a workout.

I read a book recently called Nutrition Timing. It was geared towards weight trainers but applies to anyone wanting to develop and build muscle strength. Their position is that you have to consume some form of protein within 45 minutes of finishing a workout in order to mazimize muscle repair and development. I've been doing that for the past month.

I was running outside with my running partner last week and she gave me a hard time because she said I was going to fast (but I didn't feel like I was pushing it at all). So there may be something to the 45 minute thing.

My focus this year has been on increasing the % of protein that I consume on a daily basis, since my fat intake is about 20-25% and I really struggle to get it down below that, then what I am giving up is carbs. My goal is 50% carbs, 20% fat, 30% protien.  My energy level is much better when I'm in that range than if I'm doing 60-70% carbs and 10-20% protein.

The triathlon club I work out with had a "practice" Tri today. We did 20 min swim, 30 min bike on spin bikes and 20 min run outside. I did 900 yds (11:03/500 yds), 6.7 miles on the bike (although I don't believe miles is a good measure on a spin bike) and 2.3 miles in 23:00 in the run (10 min/mile).

Not too bad. Especially the run. That's the fastest pace I've done ever.

Nice job on the mini tri!

Back to Pat's current topic of the month - I had some broccoli tonite.  Yum.  I haven't had a chance to try the green drinks 'cuz of this cold (which is hanging on!  grr!) but it's still on my list of things to try this month.

So, can fruits count too?  I am a bigger fan of eating an apple than a bag of carrots.  what say ye?

Ditto the fruit question. I tend to eat lots more fruit than veggies, just cause I like them more.

I do okay with the f/v thing most days.

I had a friend meet me at the pool yesterday. She used to coach in college...I was hoping for some advice on how to swim without getting water up my nose. She said pretty much the same thing as you guys did...at least you're all consistent!! Maybe I'm just overly sensitive, and this is just a sensation I'll have to get used to??? I'm not so panicky any more, so I guess that's some improvement. I spent some time on the side of the pool practicing my rolling/breathing motion...I even get water up my nose then. I don't think I'll ever get to the point that I LIKE to swim....I'm just hoping that I won't hate it quite so much! Maybe it's the chlorine from the pool, I don't remember being as bothered when I swam in the lake last summer. Oh well...."just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming..."

OK I have another question.  I just got a shiny new Timex women's IM watch wtih splits, for use in the pool.  I have used it a couple times, but am finding that it disrupts my stroke to hit the split button.  Is there an appropriate time to hit the button - like before turning around, right after pushing off......?  What do you guys do to keep your groove in the water?

side note - I need to learn flip turns...... i saw the tutorial and think it's great. I just have to DO it.

Hey!  I am doing pretty good, relative to the past 2 weeks.  Cold is essentially gone, stomach issues are settling down.  This is a nasty winter, it seems - a lot of our group is/has been sick!!

Today is my first 'longer' run......  4 miles.  I'm working up to a 10-miler race.  Big deal for me.
