A nice recovery weekend for me.  Not to be rude to you folks up north, but we had the most beautiful of weekends!  Not a cloud in the sky, with low 70's.  If you weren't on your bike or running this weekend in Texas, you should be shot!

I've signed up for one of the local sprint triathlons on 3/8.  This was my first ever triathlon last year, so I'm excited to see how much I've progressed.

Do you have any specific goals as far as time goes that you have set for yourself?

I haven't registered for my race yet...I need to have my swim time in order to be placed. I am not ready to time yet, so I will give it all the time I can.

I had a bad week last week for workouts...Wed. we had a foot of snow...everything was closed. I worked both Thurs. and Fri., I went to the Y and biked on Sat. and blew it off on Sunday. (-30 windchills...nice). And i worked yesterday...SO, starting this week fresh.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Do you have any specific goals as far as time goes that you have set for yourself?

Well, here are my results from last year.

300 meter swim:        7:14
T1:                             3:25
14 mile bike:            44:23
T2:                             1:07
5k run:                     23:49
Total:                    1:19:59

This is what I hope to do this year.

300 meter swim:        5:30 (improvement of 1:44)
T1:                             1:15 (improvement of 2:10)
14 mile bike:            38:00 (improvement of 6:23)
T2:                             0:45 (improvement of 0:22)
5k run:                     22:00 (improvement of 1:49)
Total:                    1:07:30 (improvement of 12:29)

That would be a great improvement!  Are those goals your expectations, or your stretch goals?  I like to set both, as I am NEVER satisfied with my results!   I feel I can always be faster and more efficient...kind of rough on myself, but that is just my type A personality

Yes, it is a 500m pool swim...I'm really happy it's not open water for my first tri. There will be 3 per lane, and still very crowded, but it's a bit more controlled. We are grouped on times for the swim to help level the playing field, so to speak!

I have not set time goals for myself because I want to focus on finishing. I am sure I will time myself at some point in the training to have an idea of where I stand. Right now, 500m does not seem long. I know I do close to that every time I swim, though I stop here and there. I have to say I am least worried about swimming...running is going to kill me. I just suck at it.

Sandy- It is great that you are not too worried about the swim, as that is what most people fear the most.  I have never done a pool swim race before (althought I have registered for one this year) so I can not speak from experience, but I can attest that the first time you feel someone swim close to you/touch your feet/body underwater it is not very comforting, as it feels like they are going to pull you under.  I would reccomend swimming with a few people in your lane (if possible) before the race and get used to touching peoples feet and vice versa so it is not new come race day.

Are those goals your expectations, or your stretch goals?

Those are more expectations.  If I had to list stretch goals, they would be the following.

swim:     5:15
T1:         1:00
bike:    37:00
T2:           :40
run:      21:40
Total: 1:05:35

The thing is, that day is a planned 110 mile ride for Ironman training.  So I'm going to have to ride 90ish miles after I finish this.  And I'm a bit scared to go all-out during the sprint, because Ironman is much more important to me.  I just can't see myself holding back during the sprint....

I hear ya on holding yourself back during a race as for me it is always easier said than done as well.  best of luck with the race and the ride after, I am sure it will go great!

Clint,

The race is April 27th in Whitewater WI, at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater. It is a 500m swim, a 14mi. bike and 3 mi. run. April is funny here in the midwest. It could be in the low 70's or mid 40's. I am hoping for the latter.

I cannot wait for the weather to improve so that I can do the training outside. For the first time I feel like I am at a stand-still when it comes to biking and running. The inside equipment just isn't the same. I know what I am doing now is not a waste of my time, but it sure is getting boring.

honestly, one of my favorite seasons to run in is in the winter, as long as you have the right clothing for it, it is nice.

Hello All,

It is NOT warming up here in Chicago/Rockford area...we just got another 2 in. of snow last nite! I really need to get outside to run. I hate the treadmill. But our weather guy showed some stats from last year. It was 74 degrees on 3/14 and 80 on 3/26 in '07, so there is hope. We do have LOTS of snow that needs to melt though!

The sprint tri is on 4/27, so I have 2 mo. left to train. I timed my 500m on Wed., and without even trying hard I did it in about 11-12 min. I know that's not a great time, but I just swam at a steady pace because it was my first time doing that much without stopping. I really am not worried about the swim. My biggest worry remains the run. I hope I can easily run 3mi. soon. It still takes lots of effort. Hopefully when I can get outside, I will see some improvement.

Also, it is time that I start looking at some bikes. Can I have some suggestions on the basics that are essential for a good tri bike? Keep in mind that I really don't see myself ever doing a full tri...just being realistic. I don't want to walk into a bike shop with zero information. Boy, would they love that!

Hope everyone is doing well!

Sandy-

Is there a price range that you are looking at?  Keep in mind that you ARE doing a full triathlon!  You have just chosen the sprint distance versus a Half Ironman or Ironman.

Let me know what you were thinking on price and I can throw a few suggestions at you

Ben

Okay...point taken! I AM doing a triathlon..I AM doing a triathlon...

You know, I have talked to people that have spent $1000. That really is out of the question...I guess I don't really know what to spend. Does at least $500 sound right? I don't need bells and whistles, but I do want a great bike. I would like to get one that allows me to add/delete things I find I need as I ride more, even before the first race.

My first bike was a Trek 1000...it did the job.  I think it was right around the $550 (plus tax) range.  This is a great time of year to get to your LBS, get fitted, and then see if they have anything used that you can score for a good deal.

Either way, I would HIGHLY reccomend getting a ROAD bike, and nothing else...you will go faster with much less effort on a road bike (skinny tires) than on anything else...your legs will thank you for it when it comes time to run!

Keep the patience with running Sandy.  I know for me, I was struggling to get to the 3-4 miles feeling comfortable.  And it was like suddenly everything clicked.  It will happen.

As for the bike, I couldn't agree more with Ben.  I bought a road bike (Specialized Allez), and it treated me great.  But I grew stubborn and thought I needed a tri-bike.  I now ride a nice tri-bike (Specialized Tranition Expert), but I often wish I had upgraded to a nicer road bike, or just kept the old road bike.  The roadie is much more comfortable and acceptable for group riding, and there are a few road bikes that have geometry very similar to tri-bikes anyways.  So strapping on aero-bars to the road bike is always a good option.  You can find a quality bike on your budget though, so don't get discouraged.

Tri season starts in just 8 days for me!  Thank goodness.  I'm having racing withdrawals!  Looks like we'll have great weather too.

Well I have hit an issue. I have Acute achilles tendonitis... need to back down on my training for next week or so... I hope this does not impact too much...

Sandy, my first bike was an Specialized Allez A1 for close to 600.00 i would not worry about trying to get the biggest best thing there is... until we have some experiance under our belt... I wouldn't worry about getting anything to crazy...
