Hard to tell if that's a 15", 16", or 17" bucketmouth.  I assume you used artificial, but what kind (I don't think topwater)?

I'm a finesse soft plastics guys for any fish in the bass family generally, a fly guy for trout, and a meat + teaser guy for pelagics.  That bass was caught with a senko, rigged wacky, which is my go to shallow water bait for LM in overfished lakes.  I'd fish a jig and pig, or a shaky head worm, if it was deep.  I had also only brought one ultralight and a flyrod on that trip since my focus was on ironman.

Here's a more respectable largemouth, also caught via a wacky-rigged senko on 4lb test ultralight.

When I was a teenager a bunch of us used to fish at Lake Merced in San Francisco everyday, even after school.  We did it for a few years and all of us wanted to go pro (heh).  I wasn't the best out of the bunch, but you go to the bait shop and there was a picture of me with the biggest largemouth pulled out of the lake (7 lbs, its a trout lake mostly)!

These days I don't fish often;  I should do it more but I really never got enamored with the fishing scene in these parts; not that SF was great but I knew every nook and cranny of those lakes.

I'll try to find some pics later!

Here is the reason for my getting back into hunting and fishing.

Here is my favorite plastic for the bucket mouths.

Don't forget that the kids love catching pan fish.

Josh, all the other guides are jealous of it. Pretty damn plush to sit in!

Michael, what kind of plastic is that? Looks like something you would find in a xxx store lol. Also try and get your kid a PA Steelhead. What a fight on light tackle!

Not sure on the brand.. I found in a box the wife keeps under the bed.

I got he and I fly rods for Xmas.  shhhh!  This year was rough for him because he broke his arm in a skateboard accident, a couple weeks into summer vacation.  We ended up doing a lot of kayak fishing so I could get him out early for bass.  I towed him around the lake.  This year we will be doing more trout fishing in the Spring.  I'll have to check around for steelhead.

My oldest loves to fly fish. One tip is to start off with the fly rod and line but use a small hook and a meal worm or trout worm. That way he gets the feel for the strike of a fish and actually fighting a fish. Flies need to have a good presentation to ellicit a response most of the time. Another fun idea is to get a small fly tying kit. Kids love to make up their own creations and to catch on something they tied.  Also fishing for panfish with a fly rod is a lot of fun. Tie up some dry flys like a simple Elk Hair Caddis and use those. Bluegills and sunnies put up a great fight on a 5 weight. The Steelhead can be found in any of the Lake Erie Tribs from October till May.

I use Power Pro mostly.
That is a cheapo $50 shimano reel I bought when my previous ultralight reel bit the dust mid trip somewhere along the way.  I tend not to drop the big $$ on that stuff, thinking of it more as disposable.  I don't expect anything I ever hook on that outfit to really require a super smooth drag, etc.

Once we get into my saltwater gear, that's where I'll plead the 5th on $$... because I don't want to be that guy who hooks into a monster (and they are out there) and know it was my tackle that was the reason it wasn't caught.  I'm generally a high-end Shimano reel guy, though I have a few Avet and Abu reels as well.

Bonus catch (bare handed) while spearing off the Bahama Cays.

The guy who took us actually swam him down until he surfaced, then snagged him. We gave chase in the boats following him. (Look up Jeremy Knowles - Olympic Swimmer)

Nassau Grouper - speared with a hawaiian sling (no air tanks)

Carribbean Spiny Lobster - speared

Typical freshwater largemouth catch - spring (lake)

Even the wife catches minnow's...

yea, I like fishing....

Reels of choice for saltwater. Pretty much bomb proof. You can actually swim with them out to offshore rocks.

Josh, you should consider putting your bike and trainer on the boat while you are striper fishing.  Set up the reel so you have to pedal those big boys into the boat.  I may have to work up a Photoshop of this for you.

Thanks man.  I speared him with a 5' Hawaiian sling.  My buddy saw him first and started chasing him in a giant circle.  When he finally realized the fish was onto him, he stopped but pushed him right into me where I lay in wait.  The best part of the story was taking the fish to the local Thai restaurant where I befriended the owner enough to prepare it kra pao style (deep fried and smothered in Thai Chile's and basil) for us.

If you do take up the sport, my only advice is to have patience, the big fish know what the tip of a spear looks like, and think of it more like hunting rather than fishing.  RI has some nice wreck diving.  I will be up that way for a beer festival in the spring and the Minuteman Sprint in June.

I fish out of Destin.  We do everything from bottom fishing (to keep the wife happy with a supply of grouper), to, my fav, trolling for wahoo, dolphin, & billfish.

I also like surf fishing.  Here is a nice redfish from the Grayton Beach this spring
