I would say that `50/50' with Joseph Gordon Levitt was totally underrated.

What ya got?

If you have a friend going through chemo, it means a lot more.  If you're just looking for a funny movie with Seth Rogan, not as good.  I liked it.

I think "Touching the Void" was not particularly noticed by many.  It's a good one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379557/

That movie made me anxious...  But it was good.  I could relate, to a small level.

DirecTV offers under the info button, the rating for each movie.  Stars vs, rotten tomatoes vs, some popcorn thing.

I found that rotton tomatoes and the popcorn thing pretty reliable.  Moves with high star rating and low rotten tomatoes score, are usually not that good.  High rotten tomato scores vs stars and they are typically good.

You get some true stinkers like Green Lantern that was half a star, 9% on the rotten tomatoes and 7% popcorn thingy.

Or smash hits like Jaws that's 4.5 stars, 96% on RT and 94% on the other.

Most underrated of all time?

My list would have to include:

"Manhunter" - the original version of Red Dragon with Brian Cox as Hannibal Lector.
"Ed Wood" with Johnny Depp as the worst movie director of all time
"Angel Heart" - a good thriller with Mickey Rourke as a detective working for a curious client
"Three O'Clock High" - a weird 80's high school comedy about a geek dreading a fight with the school psycho after school

I'm sure there are dozens more I can't recall at the moment.

That was on late night HBO or something the not too long ago.  Watched it for the first time in decades!  Pretty good.  However, it's always interesting to see what was common or acceptable then and wouldn't fly today.  Also made me think of another one like that called my body guard.

For example, watching John McLain in die hard carry his pistol on a plane.  No way that happens now.  Someone saw it under his jacket and all he said was, "don't worry, I'm a cop" and the passenger was cool.

Anyone see "Four Rooms"?

Not sure if it's under rated or more of a cult classic, but it's fantastic.  The dead hooker under the bed sketch had my laughing so hard her stomach was cramping up.

The above-listed might be questionable for underrated.  I checked out Rotten Tomatoes.  They give Critics and Audience averages for "Liked It."  Manhunter was 94%/70% respectively.  Ed Wood 92%/83%, Angel Heart 78%/78%, 3 o'clock high 63%/69%.  (well, I guess 3 O'Clock High could qualify on 2nd thought

Now how 'bout some love for seriously panned movies?  I put forth one...Basic Instinct.  54%/64%.  One that I think the critics got wrong and audiences got right, What Dreams May Come 55%/85%.  ...and one the audience got wrong in my opinion, Sirens at 73%/34%.  Elle Macpherson never looked more amazing.

"Moon", good one. That was a really cheap movie to make (only like 4 characters on screen) at around $3mm but grossed something like $20mm.

The Fisher King - Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges in the best of the Terry Gilliam movies.

Lars and the Real Girl - Ryan Gosling.

I saw Mr. Gilliam and Mr. Gosling disparaged in the other thread.  Two of my favorites include them, though.  I am not sure how they were "rated," but neither were popular mainstream movies.

    BellinghamSpence - 2013-04-23 8:17 AM I always watch Apocolypto.

I really enjoyed that one, too.  I think it sort of flew under the radar as that was around the time Mel Gibson's opinions on the Jewish people came raging out and he called a female cop sugartits.

Mel's personal issues aside, it was a visually stunning movie that had me on the edge of my seat.

I wouldn't call Melancholia under-rated.  Kirsten Dunst won best actress at Cannes for it.
