Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon Training Thread Did my 9 miler this with with CARA, easy peasy. My two marathons were in 2004 & 2005, I guess all that running in between has helped, LOL!! I feel great this year training. Every year I run so much by the end of summer, I wished I had signed up for the marathon, so this year I did. Hope my good training continues, I know it's SUPER early!, LOL |

Veteran 706 Illinois | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon Training Thread 10k race in Arlington Heights on Sunday, followed by a nice 42 mile ride in the afternoon. Recovery run on Monday, with a set of intervals this morning. Plus OWS clinic for Chicago Triathlon today if the weather holds. Anyone want to give odds on my long run tomorrow happening? |

Member 37 Chicago | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon Training Thread I also train with CARA. I don't think it's a problem for you to jump in a week or two with the group. I am one of the Darien Pace Group Leaders - so we will NOT be at Waterfall Glen this weekend due to the Xtreme 10 race going on there this weekend. Last Saturday was a tough one with the heat and humidity. Let's see what this Saturday holds for us! MJ |

There were so few runners out there that when I did pass someone there was that little head-nod that basically said `Oh, I thought I was the only idiot out running today.' |

Regular 265 | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon Training Thread Hey fivecents, this is week 5 or 6? I did a 10miler last Sunday (nite). It was very hot, humid and almost no breeze on lake front Last mile was all walk. Do you guys think it's cooler on lake shore trail or on mag mile/ inside streets?Tall building provide some decent cover from sun but city probably has more residual heat from all the people, automobiles etc. |

I think the lake path is DEFINITELY cooler. There aren't many trees, but you'll get a nice cool breeze off the lake. The buildings just trap heat in the inner streets. I am always hotter walking around downtown than on the lake path.

More trees and fewer people. |

Personally I don't ride my bike south OR north on the trail other than very early on weekdays as the entire thing is a sh*tshow. As for running, you should be OK but honestly if you're worried, just go to the little park thing at 37th street or the Promontory Park at 55th. |

Veteran 301 Oak Park | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon Training Thread Originally posted by ironbaby How far south can I go before it gets shady? OMG when I first read this I thought you were talking about trees. I'm way too dialed in to the weather and tired/foggy from getting up at 4:45 a.m.! I think you can go pretty far south on that path. Especially in the morning hours. I don't recall ever hearing about crime on the path itself. It's sort of separated from the local neighborhoods by the expressway. |

Veteran 301 Oak Park | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon Training Thread One final note - If you head north or south, I recommend not wearing headphones while you are running. Too much bike/pedestrian traffic. |

Heh... reminds of a controversial thread on another forum about carrying compact Sig Sauer's in their saddlepack lol. I wonder how many of them that happen on lake front trail actually get reported. |

Haha... no I wasn't talking about trees but as mr2tony suggested, it's lot more green compared to northern part of the trail and quieter too. Mostly runners and roadies. Btw, is the Northerly Island (as named on the map) any good? I was trying to do a loop over there but roads were blocked due to some event. Looks like a cool spot on the map, not sure if it is any good in terms of shade, trail, fountains etc. |

Regular 265 | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon Training Thread Wrapped this week with an 11miler in afternoon. Since it was done around 3pm, second half got a little too much in the sun. Doing Rock n Roll HM next weekend. Should I taper or keep up the mileage like training week? Goal will be to hit the finish line and that's all. Run... walk... run... finish. |

Veteran 301 Oak Park | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon Training Thread If goal is just to hit the finish line I wouldn't taper. It's just a training run. I did the Waterfall Glen Xtreme 10-Miler this weekend... awesome race if you like trails. Loads of hills and unlimited free Lagunitas beer after My focus was on maintaining marathon pace vs. getting all swept up into race pace, and I managed to hit my goal. That was my last race before the marathon. Gosh, it's getting real. |

Master 1730 Straight outta Compton | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon Training Thread It's an expensive training run~ $100 or so to enter? Personally I'd taper a little and see how things go. If you're on the novice training plan, your longest run thus far is 10 miles. The jump to 13.1 should be a challenge. |

Master 1730 Straight outta Compton | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon Training Thread Speaking of training runs and races, I'm thinking about doing this as a last minute irrational decision: http://www.allcommunityevents.com/gfasf/gfasf_home.html I was going to do Rock N' Roll (free entry) but I would rather avoid the hassle and get it over with at sunset on Saturday night. Bonus for me- this race runs right through the AT&T complex in Hoffman Estates, since I'm an employee I can use the facilities before and after |

Regular 265 | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon Training Thread Even if I "tapered", I don't know if I'd make any difference. I am too much of a newbie to running and it would still take everything out of me to finish this distance. Is race pace much different than training pace? IMO, for a first timer or someone without time goals the concept of race-pace really doesn't exist... most are just doing it for fun. I am not a fast guy on feet, wheels or in water so maybe this pace thing is beyond me. |

I did the NYC Triathlon on Sunday. It was brutally hot and humid and quite hilly. So, yeah, it suuuuucked. |

RnR is up to $150 right now. Ouch. |
