Thanks. I feel good as to where I am currently in regards to my training but the full Vineman will be a different challenge altogether.

Thanks for the pictures Tom. Bleak view of the river. This drought is awful Hopefully the dam can create enough room for the swim.

Jose, the way it looks now is exactly the way it looked at this time last year, so don't be too concerned as the dam did the dam job dam well and there was plenty of water

According to Russian River Parks and Rec, the dam goes into place on June 15, and takes a few days to fill in. I was hoping it was sooner, so I can get some time in the river before the race.

Dan, it is just like swimming in any still body of fresh water. Stick close to the buoy line and it isn't too shallow to swim. Want to walk for a bit, you can scoot outside a bit and do that too. It is a super friendly swim.

Training is starting to build, and I'm a feelin' it.  Last week was 14.5 hours of training, long ride this week is 4.5 hours and my swim today was a 3800 yard workout.  Times and HR are still good, but arms and legs are feeling a bit heavy.  Paying lots of attention to nutrition and hitting the 50-60% carb level each day with what should be sufficient calories, and also hitting my target of at least 150g of protein each day.  I'm hoping this is one of those things that you just have to overcome and notice one day that things are feeling lighter and faster.

The tight calves are still an issue, but I found a youtube self massage video that seems to be helping.  I talked to my bike fitter and we've dropped the seat by about 5 mm to see if that gives some relief as well; tomorrow's ride will be the test to see if that is the culprit.

Anyone else having issues that perhaps the group could help with?

Finally - Dan, how did your course ride go?

Tom- I am feeling the fatigue of the build up as well. I am hoping with time I will get used to it. Right now it feels like I just train and eat. I am getting in aorund 14 hours the last couple weeks so glad to know I am on track. I am loosely following a training plan, but have to adjust it for life constantly. I have been trying to do the long runs mid week as back to back with the long bike gives me knee issues. It is rough to try to work after that. I did find a bike video which has helped me with increasing intensity on the trainer.

Thanks for the info on the bike course. Perhaps I can quit worrying about hitting a pothole and worry about something else instead.

I use the small Trigger Point roller on my calves and it seems to help.

Regarding the swim, so glad to know I can stand up. I have an open water 4500 swim next weekend. Just typing that makes me nervous, but it will help my confidence level to complete it, however long it takes. I have read people recommending sleeveless wetsuits. Do you think the long sleeve will be too warm?

Kate - I hear you about the eating.  It is sometimes a challenge to get in enough high quality calories in a day.  The other day I was so far behind I went to Baskin Robbins and got a shake.  Lots of calories, perhaps not the best quality, but sure was good.  At the end of the day I often find I'm lacking carbs for the day and resort to a slice or two of whole wheat bread with jam or honey to help make up the deficit.  One thing I've learned during this nutrition cycle is how hard it is to eat out at restaurants and avoid high fat content meals!  There is so much data available on-line now it is possible to make wiser choices, but still I am amazed at how much fat is in that food.  I guess I shouldn't be as I've watched a lot of cooking shows in my time and the professional chefs repeat time after time, "Fat is flavor!".

Last year during the 70.3 I wore a full wetsuit and was comfortable.  As I recall, most swimmers were in fulls, but some were sleeveless.  Water temps will be in the 70's for sure (the concern becomes "Will it be wetsuit legal?"), so it really becomes a personal preference at that point.  Good luck on your 4500 this weekend, hope it goes well!  Take note of the water temp; maybe that'll help you decide on full vs. sleeveless.

I was having too many issues with my knees so I am out. I was in with Rita on the 50% deal so if anyone is still looking to register they can take my place on the promo. Looks like it will save someone about $120.

As I read this I am racked with guilt over the hot wings that I completely enjoyed last night. I would like to say that I wouldn't do it again but I would be lying. I'm so hungry all the time that inevitably some of the bad stuff is going in. "Fat is flavor" is right!

Brian, sorry to hear that your knees are being a problem. Hopefully it is something that you can rehab and be back in your shoes for another race before too long!

Just popping in to encourage all of you. Vineman was my first full last year and it was AWESOME! There is a grocery store right near the swim and is a great place to take care of some morning bathroom needs. Swim is pretty crowded and shallow but fun. I would recommend that you have a mat or a junk towel to stand on in T1 because it was super muddy. Don't try and ride up the short steep hill at the mount line. Most of us that walked the 15 yards up it passed the people trying to clip in and ride up it. Enjoy the ride! It is beautiful! Lots of rolling hills. You are always going up or down. I will say it was super cold at first. Took me about 20 miles to stop shivering. The roads are super rough. Lots of ejected water bottles and broken chains. Just keep your hands on the bars and eyes on the road. Chalk hill is 3/4 mile. Just keep turning the pedals. Enjoy the challenge with those around you. It's kind of fun to get to the top and see everyone dressed up and cheering. The run sucked for me but that's because I hate running. Haha! It was all rolling mild hills. The nice thing is there are a lot of people cheering along the way. You guys will have a blast! Keep putting in those training hours!

Thanks AKrenik for the info. I have to laugh when you say the swim is fun, as I always wonder if anyone likes swimming. We are total opposites as if I can get through the swim and bike, will be so happy to get the running shoes on. It is nice to hear about the bike course as this is what made me select Vineman. I will be riding a long time and wanted something "fun".

Hope all have a good training weekend. Enjoy your wings and blizzards while you can...

Well, I did the second loop of the Bike Course yesterday. It was absolutely beautiful. I started around 10:30, and finished around 2:30. A nice 55 mile ride with a few pit stops. Hydration is going to be key. Yesterday was nice, but it reached about 95-98 degrees out on the course. There are parts that have shade on East side Road, up to West Side Road, but after that once you are on Dry Creek the shade disappears for most of the ride until you get over onto Chalk Hill Road.

East Side Road is nicely paved, and there are a few rough patches on. Wohler road in particular is pretty rough, as was Pleasant Road/Faught road. Be prepared on those as they are tire eaters.

The ride is absolutely beautiful. Vineyard after Vineyard rolls by. I live in the area, and I was impressed.

I did the ride after having a cold all week, and didn't drink enough fluids on the ride. I normally need 1 bottle per hour and by mile 51 I was severely dehydrated. It was a nice lesson to learn with 9 weeks to go. Based on how much fluid I needed after the ride I would need to do 1.5 bottles an hour minimum over the ride which is a significant amount of liquid.

The climbing on the ride is pretty minimal. Canyon road is a nice slow gradual climb with a fun downhill at the top to Highway 128. The downhill was too short for my liking, but was a nice respite. Chalk Hill Road has more ups and downs until you get to the actual climb. It is short, steep, and in the shade which was nice. After Chalk Hill, the ride is pretty easy downhill the rest of the way.

Airport Blvd is under construction over the Freeway. The road is pretty bumpy, and there is minimal shoulder. I hope the construction is done before the race, but I wouldn't count on it.

I drove the run course after the ride. I can see how hilly it is. From the high school you quickly exit a residential neighborhood and are in the country with some tough rollers. The hills are short, steep, and frequent. Be forewarned about the ups and downs of the hills. Looking at the course map online doesn't really prepare you for what is coming. Do hill intervals if you can.

I think it is going to be a fun race, but if the temps are high, which I expect them to be, it will be tough to stay up on hydration.

Dan, great report on your ride. I hope that construction on Airport is done by race day, or at least cleaned up enough to make it bearable. Do you remember if the railroad crossing shortly after that was still really rough? On my ride I took Shiloh instead of Airport to avoid the construction so did not get to ride it. I remember from the 70.3 last year it was REALLY in bad shape and am hoping they've repaired it by now.

I remember two railroad crossings. One was paved, nice, and smooth. The other was bumpy and you had to watch where you were going. On the bumpy one, there were some big divots in the ground, with mounds you need to steer clear of. It was a tire/wheel eater.

Another week of training in the bag.  Yesterday was another combination day: 2100 swim/58 bike (3 hour)/6.7m run.  Interesting the way that my plan has this set up such that my "recovery" weeks (ie: fewer hours) all include these combo workouts - I like it.  Did the bike all in z2 to emulate race conditions so that I could see how the run would go.  Targeted a 9:00 pace and wanted to stay in z2 as long as possible.    Worked out pretty well with an average HR z2.5, but in the last couple of miles it was cresting z3.  Still have some training time left so feeling OK about it.

But the high point of the week was that my youngest daughter got married, completing the trio of daughters entering wedlock.  A beautiful day set in the towering redwoods, and a perfect event in all ways.  Definitely a proud Poppa here!

Nice picture Tom, certainly more exciting than the tri talk. I think she said yes to the right dress! Beautiful girl.

Not sure how that triple session is a recovery week, but nice to get it done. Amazing how a 3 hour bike ride is looking short.
I am planning a 100 miler tomorrow, temp expected to be 100 plus to we'll see how long I last. The swims are still tough for me. I may have to get some waterproof music. There are still a lot of long swims to go. And I can't get away with skipping much swimming.

Congratulations to you and your family. It is nice to hear of "regular" life events, other than saddle sores, swimming, and nutrition for triathlons.

This has been a rest week, and then next week I have a half on Sunday (Folsom Long Course). It will be interesting to see how things play out. It is a similar course as Vineman, and similar temperatures. Ill update you all as to how it goes.

Congratulations again to you and your family Tom.

108 miles, 104 degrees...10 bottles of fluid, 3 gus, 1 granola bar, 2 paydays. Post ride pool jump...priceless. Is Rolling Rock a recovery drink?

Had to sleep in today, my run will be on the treadmill, ugh!

I was out there with ya last year and SECOND all of this! Except coming from Kansas I would describe the hills on the run as exponentially harder than I imagined, ha! I walked a good bit of the run but part of that was that my IT Band quit working.

I wore my arm warmers and gloves until mile 56 on the bike, I was that cold.

Enjoying following ya'lls journeys in this thread and living vicariously through you this year
Keep on keeping on! It will be here before you know it.

Kate, great job on getting that ride done in tough conditions. If race day is a hot one, you'll be really prepared! And yes, Rolling Rock definitely qualifies as a recovery drink. Gotta get your carbs back in the body, right? Ann-Marie and Lisa, thanks for the good insights and words of encouragement. A number of us are doing our first IM distance race and your words carry a lot of weight! Any advice is welcome :-)

Pain shows us how strong we are. After last weekend I am convinced of this. After 151 training hours of swimming, biking, and running, I flew to Sonoma County, California for the race.
