On this cycle I did 2 x 22-milers and 3 x 20-milers. I don't know if 20 vs. 22 really makes a difference, but as somebody else mentioned, it feels a lot closer to the full distance. These are taking rather less than 3 hours, so I don't feel that I'm out there for too long. I'm not sure that there's a specific duration that is so-long-that-its-damaging. My experience is that the damage comes when the long run is very long relative to the other runs that you're doing. This cycle I've been doing a couple of mid-week runs of 13-15 miles each week, and with that background I find that the 20-22 milers are much easier to recover from. |

When I am suppose to run 20 miles in training I usually just do a marathon. I figure 20 mile training run with a 6.2 mile cool down. 5 miles is no joke. I was training to try to do the ironman so I would run 5 miles and swim 2 miles as an example. I am not looking at your kind of speed so take it with a grain of salt. |

And not just the rest of the week, but really the overall plan and again, the purpose of the workout. Also Colin makes an excellent point about the relation of the distance to the rest of your weekly volume. The bigger of a percentage that long run is, the more difficult it is to execute and recover. |

But, as others have alluded to...the rest of my week was filled with high quality (i.e. not slow) medium mileage. |

I usually capped it at 2.5hrs. (My stand alone M times were around 3:15-3:20 most recently) I also did a 50K ultra with a LR of 16 miles, but that was during a relatively high mileage block for me. |

The longest I go is 20, but I do two 55 mile weeks (I know that's not super high)... most of my weeks were around 40-50 miles. |

For HM training the limiter is the overall mileage, which in turn constrains the long run distance. If I'm training just for a HM, then I'll aim to run over distance, up to 16 miles for my most recent try. That was in the context of 50-60mpw run-only training. On the other hand, if I'm training for a HIM then my run ceiling is probably around 40mpw, and I wouldn't want to do a 16-miler on that weekly mileage, as the long run would be 40% of the weekly total. On 35-40mpw I'd probably max out at 12 miles for the long run. |

I know it's bad but I'm also in a never ending base period for my IM (which is in Sept, so it's still far away but I'm concerned with that), so I'm doing maybe 20 miles during the week and they are all brick workouts. Bad I know but I don't see where I'll fit in more running time since I'm swimming 4x/week and biking 3x-4x/week now too. At least my overall fitness is better from it though. My biggest limiter was that I used to run everything in Z2 with maybe some intervals. Z2 was my marathon zone....period. This year I'm upping up the intensity and I'm able to actually go into Z3 for a long time. Guess I must have skipped the pages all these years which state that training and racing at tempo/Z3 actually isn't bad for "short" races like marathons and anything shorter. |

I'm assuming covering the full run distance multiple times is okay since it's only 13.1? you are going to want to run more than 13.1 for a HIM as your long run. your legs are going to start the run feeling like they are at mile 6-8 with another 13.1 to go if that makes sense. how much more depends on how you plan to pace the bike and how much transitioning from bike to run affects you. |
