In the middle of it, when you are worried about if you are doing okay, where you are going to finish, do you look like you know what you are doing.....just have fun! I should clarify: the reason I'm asking is because I went for a run on Tuesday and basically imploded after 1.5 mi. I decided to push myself since it was only a 30 min run. I started out at ~9:30 mpm and and by the halfway point, I felt like I had an iron band around my chest at diaphragm level and was really nauseated. I've had that happen before when it's hot and/or I've gone out too fast; the only thing I can do is stop running. No more running for the day - that's it - I'm kaput. Sunday is supposed to have a high of 93*. My wave starts at 8, so I'll be on the run, where there's no shade whatsoever, around 9:15 or so. Knowing that I'm fairly susceptible to the heat and that the bike is going to be taxing, I want to set myself up to succeed, not blow up. Worst case scenario, I know that I can just walk, but I really really really want to be able to run across the finish line and would prefer not to vomit all over my friends and family just so I can do it. 10:30 sounds like a reasonable starting point. It will be hot and your legs will probably feel a bit weird for at least the first .25-.5 miles or so off the bike. Listen to your body: your legs, your breathing, how you feel overall. Keep checking yourself and adjust from there. Back it down if you feel too hot or are breathing too hard. Pick it up a little if you are feeling good. Make sure there is some left for a nice, strong FINISH! |

Make sure there is some left for a nice, strong FINISH! With everything you mentioned I think this is a time to listen to your body over paying attention to pace. I would just take it really easy in the beginning (taking Melanie's tips about breathing and general feel in mind) and just make adjustments as needed. |

I should be okay sleep-wise and I have choir practice tomorrow morning, which is always fun and engaging. Now if I can just make it through the rest of the day here at work. I need something brainless to do because my brain is so not here at work!

Don't stress too much (I would say not at all but we all know that's not gonna happen). You have so got this, you have done the training, you are ready and now all you need to do is ENJOY YOURSELF! It's not who crosses the line first that is the true winner, it's the person with the biggest smile and who has the most fun, after all that is why we mere mortals do tris.Originally posted by rrrunner Originally posted by laffinrock Thanks for the pace advice, everybody. Thank you so much for the oh so bright and cheery birthday wishes Jason and the kids started my day with cards, coffee, singing and flowers. It was pretty great. However, I spent today in recovery mode from last night's festivities.

I am at Lake Stevens 70.3 to cheer on my training partners partner. She was incredibly supportive of me (him too of course!) during training and race so I am hoping she will feel the same from me! We swam this morning and I also ran for the first time in 3 weeks! Just 20 minutes but all felt good ??. I was so excited to run, I really missed it, but the rest was definitely the right thing. |

Veteran 659 East Texas | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014 v.2 thread2 CLOSED (Poptart/pet pic bribes?) Well I survived my first road race. Some of you have seen on strava but for those that aren't it went really well right up until the end. I stayed in the lead pack the entire race and with 1000 meters to go I positioned myself about 3-4 back for the sprint. With 600 meters to go someone hit me hard from behind and broke my rear wheel. I stayed upright but my wheel was totally locked up. My race was over. Had to get off and carry my bike the last 1/2 mile. While it's not how I wanted to finish the day I did finish. It was fun and I've really improved on the bike over the last few months. |

Master 3870 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014 v.2 thread2 CLOSED (Poptart/pet pic bribes?) We did our Barn Burner pre-ride yesterday. About a dozen riders showed up...I was the only female. Seems that's about the normal ratio. Strava shows 500+ men and <60 women. It's a gorgeous ride, and so glad we went. Getting a preview of the trail was invaluable, especially for us flatlanders. Some slow, unending climbs and super fast, rocky downhills.
