I wouldn't argue that an aero helmet doesn't save time.....my point was that for lot of people, it doesn't save NEAR as much time as you are talking about because of a host of other issues.....riding position being the biggest. Again, throwing this kind of stuff out to people who think it will give them huge time gains, at the cost of some of this equipment, is not really fair to them.
Any one element of race day setup is not going to be a huge time savings - but when you put everything together you can certainly make some pretty big improvements (and it doesn't have to be super expensive to save quite a bit of time ).
I don't know that it isn't fair - the aero helmet is going to depend on position but often still better than a standard road helmet (even if barely ) but the wheels/tires/tubes offer an advantage for all. Whether it is worth it to an individual will of course come down to funds available, goals, etc.
