Poking my head in for a moment during a busy week.  Kids on spring break.  SXSW.  Trying to get workouts in.  Oh, yeah, a little bit of work (but really just a bit).

So, GO RACERS.  Janyne, hope you crush it.  Chris, hope you meet up with friends (how long is the ride?) and have a great time.

Heal up DL-ers (a shorter list than the last few months have averaged, at least, but that's small comfort to those on it!).

Took the family to SXSW today (OK - this will be obnoxious, but it was such a blast!).  Drove in, parked one block from Key Bar, walked right up to the stage (we were on the sidewalk, as the kids are too young for the bar - they were carding at the door... which was very un-Austin, by the way, but the rules are stricter during SXSW).

I mean like THREE FEET from the edge of the stage, at stage level.  It was like being ON the bleedin' thing!  Saw Melanie Martinez, The Ting Tings, Lifehouse and Blue October before heading back home before the rain started.

So amazing to be able to do this and share it with the kids.

If I get the photos off the stinkin' iPhone, I'll post a couple.  Just nuts!

Anywho, off to grill some burgers.  Hope you all have great weekends!

Matt

Yes! So awesome Matt. It's so hard to describe sx to those that haven't been. Did you get lots of free booze and food? I didn't pay for either then ENTIRE week when I go. That may bd more challenging with under ages though. I'm surprised you found an all ages venue. They are super strict during sx. how was blue october? I haven't seen them in years.I

Blue October was one of my faves.  The lead singer has a very different look than in the past (but is just as intense as ever!) - great show.  Ting Tings were maybe the surprise breakout - they were GREAT live.

Not as much free booze **for us** - we had to take in shows from either outside the venue (but our sidewalk seats were the best in the house for some!) or at public ones where you could buy (and they didn't card on the way in) or in the street (lots of crazy good bands just playing on the sidewalk between gigs).  But was worth it to take the kids to it!

If you make it down next year, you know where I am (and all pod-mates are welcome!).

Matt

ETA - I can't promise lots of room, depending on how many people trek down from parts far and sundry, but I can promise a three hots and a cot!

M

Wading?!?  That's awesome!  Was just talking with my oldest (14) this afternoon about getting down to the coast and fishing.  While we love Austin, we all really miss the salt.

You ever fly fish?  One of my competing obsessions is fly fishing the salt!

I've never fly fished, but I'd love to get into it. I used to wade fish the coast 2 weekends a month before having kids. I absolutely love it. Once my boys get a little older I'll get another boat and get back after it. There's some great fly fishing to be had in the bays. Try and find a guide that specializes in it. Try Rockport, Upper Laguna/Baffin or Port Mansfield/Lower Laguna.

I'm not sure if our schedules will work or not but I think it would be a great opportunity. Do you have any tips or things I shouldknow?I imagine communication is going to be the number one. As I've mentioned, I've seen our local guy, Aaron and his guide. I just fear my lack of knowledge and experience might be an issue. I don't want my ignorance to come across as insensitivity.

Super opportunity and service indeed. Honestly, don't worry about insensitivity because yes, communication is key--ask the stupid questions, ask all the questions, especially since the answers will vary from one vis-impaired to the next.

General training/guiding tips (from working with blind athletes, students, and friends in the U.S. and then blind athletes and dragging Kingsley into tri here): be talkative. Most vis-impaired people echolocate to a significant degree, a few words or short phrase every 10-15 sec or so, so they know exactly where you are, just loud enough to distinguish from other noises but not loud enough to drown the other noises out.

Most will also have a preferred side for you to be on (usually closer to the center of the road).

Be short and clear about anything in the road, changing surface or conditions, e.g., "gravel on your right, move slightly left". Remember that THEIR right may be YOUR left (depending on which side you're on). "Short step down from the curb in 3, 2, 1, now"

Good good.  Before long, she'll be proud of her battle wound (if she isn't already) and will be telling *everybody* about how she got it.  I have a similar scar.  Mine was from a piano bench leg and I have the story down pat, although I don't tell it much anymore.  What happened to the poor tyke?!

Playing hide and seek. Decided to start running while her eyes were still shut, ran straight into a wall.

If I had a nickel for every time I did that coming out of T2...

Glad she's well and looks to be in good spirits.  Super scary when the kids bleed (I'm used to blood and gore, but NOT when it's my own family's!).

Colonoscopies aren't fun but too bad you'll have to wait until summer to do it.  Hope you don't feel this miserable until then!!

Hey, Manatees.  I found a super fun-looking relay called the Flaming Foliage Relay, fka the Colorado Relay.  It's in the mountains, goes over 3 passes, is 165 miles with 30 legs of 5.5 mi. each, and is in September, hence the reference to flaming foliage.  I can't do it this year, but if we want to do a trail-running Manatee Meet-Up, this would be amazing!!  Here's the info.

For you East Coasters, there's the Green Mountain Relay in Vermont in June.  That one is 36 legs and 200 mi., all on Rte. 100.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
